Department for International Trade roles (DIT)

The UK Department for International Trade (DIT) has overall responsibility for promoting UK trade across the world and attracting foreign investment to our economy.

We are a specialised government body with responsibility for negotiating international trade policy, supporting business, as well as delivering an outward-looking trade diplomacy strategy.

The vacancy is for one intern who will provide commercial and administrative support to the Healthcare and Life Sciences team, based in the British Consulate-General São Paulo.

The selected candidate will support the connection of investors, companies, universities and researchers with British expertise and products, for the purposes of import, distribution, manufacturing and technical and institutional cooperation, promoting the expansion of British companies to Brazil. Besides the intermediation of contact between institutions in the United Kingdom and Brazil, the team also develops strategic actions in market access, aiming at harmonising international regulatory parameters in the health area.

You will have the opportunity to participate at commercial meetings, fairs, internal and external events, in order to develop your professional skills and experience to enhance your future career prospects.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the organisation of events such as trade missions, seminars and other special events
  • Keep DataHub (Customer Relationship Management) databases updated
  • Conduct market researches and identify business opportunities
  • Give support to possible demands from UK stakeholders about Brazil
  • Attend trade fairs and official events when necessary
  • Monitor the internet, newspapers and specialised magazines gathering information for the team and producing newsletters
  • Undergraduate Student, preferably in International Relations, Business, International Commerce, Marketing, a healthcare related area or related disciplines.
  • The person should also be flexible, organised, dynamic and pro-active.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English and Portuguese, and excellent communication and presentation skills with both languages.
  • Knowledge in Microsoft Office package.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, team player, quick learner.
  • Proactive self-starter, willing to “go the extra mile”; collaborative, organised, responsible, creative and opened to learn and receive feedback
  • 2nd or 3rd year undergraduate student

Learning and development opportunities:

Essential HMG training will be given at the beginning of the term, with on-the-job training available throughout. The intern will develop the skills required for the promotion of trade between Brazilian and British companies and gain experience of events logistics, administrative tasks and sector knowledge (Healthcare and Life Sciences).

The Department for International Trade encourages staff development through internal programmes, shadowing with colleagues and an effective development plan. 

Working patterns:

30 hours a week. It is desirable the successful candidate studies during the evening.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
