This position supports the UK-NZ partnership on a wide range of global issues – from the UK-NZ Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to broader prosperity issues and regional work. This exciting role will help establish the conditions for a strong, bilateral relationship between the UK and New Zealand.
Working as part of the trade policy team, you will assist on a variety of policy, project, and administration tasks. You will also support colleagues working on other areas such as Climate Change, Science & Innovation, Development Policy and other areas at Post as required.
You will work closely across the Wellington High Commission and Auckland Consulate-General, with some opportunity for travel. There is significant scope to flex the job to play to the strengths and experience of the successful candidate, and for their own future development. There may be times when your work will flex to meet wider High Commission priorities.
You will be part of a small and friendly team, and enjoy working as part of the wider High Commission team. Equally you will be comfortable leading on work with limited supervision.
The jobholder may be required to operate outside of their role should there be a crisis affecting the UK and NZ such as a natural disaster which requires the British High Commission to suspend some or all of usual business.
Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve | Me whakatutukihia:
This is a fascinating time to join the UK in New Zealand whānau; a time of unprecedentated global challenges and opportunities. This exciting role will help support the work of the Global Issues Team to establish the conditions for a strong, bilateral relationship with New Zealand.
Key activities:
- Project delivery. You will support the Global Issues team in Wellington through various projects. Such as event organisation and logistics, providing administrative support to policy leads, and other ad hoc team co-ordination and administrative support as needed. (50%)
- Policy. Support policy work, such as on FTA implementation. Responsibility for discreet policy issues. Collaboration with colleagues based in Wellington, Auckland, and the UK to support inward visits of UK Ministers and Senior Officials, including liaising with NZ Government stakeholders. (25%)
- Communications. Support Comms Officer to deliver sophisticated, modern, communications campaigns. (15%)
- Corporate. As a member of UK in NZ Learning & Development Committee, you will organise, coordinate, and contribute to programmes for all-staff learning and development, including improving Te Reo learning and capability, and the annual all-staff L&D camp hosted in Wellington. (10%)
Essential on Arrival:

Desirable:
- An honours-level degree in a relevant social science field (e.g. economics, public policy, political science, history)
- Ability to translate complex issues into a well drafted prose with clear analysis and recommendations
- Experience of developing and delivering campaigns
- Video content editing skills
- Experience developing and managing events

Working patterns | Te momo mahi:
This role is full-time – 36.25 hours per week excluding lunch breaks.
Normal office hours are 0845-1700. This role offers scope for flexible working hours, including some home working. There will be a requirement for occasional and limited out-of-hours work to support major events and visits. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a pattern of working that works best for them and the wider team.
Due to the nature of being in contact with London, there may be times when you will need to start early or work late; time off in lieu for working additional hours will be available.
Other Information:
Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period pursuant to section 67A of the Employment Relations Act 2000, and gaining and maintaining Posts security clearance requirements.
Open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents, and partners/dependents of UK-based diplomatic staff currently posted in New Zealand. Employment offers are subject to successful clearance of pre-employment checks. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position. Candidates must have or be able to obtain work authorisation for New Zealand in order to apply.
