Main purpose of job:

The Assistant Political Officer, Human Rights, leads the Embassy’s work on a number of key human rights and good governance issues, including supporting the design and implementation of the UK government’s human rights programme in Indonesia.

The successful candidate will be required to handle a broad range of tasks, working flexibly and with significant autonomy to understand and influence key Indonesian decision-makers on all aspects of the human rights agenda and good governance issues. The successful candidate will also support the Political Counsellor and Second Secretary Political on the wider political agenda.

Travel opportunities within Indonesia as part of your research and reporting requirements should increase in line with relaxing of restrictions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Maintaining expert knowledge of Indonesia’s complex human rights picture, and being able to quickly and concisely share that information and policy recommendations with others through written reports and oral briefings to senior diplomats.
  • Developing an extensive personal network of contacts to provide accurate information on key developments and facilitate key meetings for the Ambassador and other senior diplomats.
  • Programme management of a number of significant human rights projects to ensure they deliver maximum impact and value for money.
  • Contributing to briefings for UK Ministers, diplomats, UK Businesses, and other visiting VIPs on Human Rights and rule of law issues.
  • Assisting the Political Team across a broad range of emerging political issues when required, and supporting the Embassy’s extensive social and corporate activities.

All staff are currently working from home due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is likely to change in line with local restrictions and Embassy guidelines. Staff might be able to continue working from home and/or blend home and office working.


  • Fluent communication and networking skills in English (oral and written) IELTS 6.5+ or equivalent
  • Fluent spoken Bahasa Indonesia
  • A degree majoring in a relevant subject is essential; a postgraduate degree is desirable
  • Self-motivation and the ability to work under light supervision
  • Strong interpersonal and team-working skills
  • Good IT skills and experience, including MS Office
  • Strong prior understanding of the International Human Rights framework, including UN International Conventions, and the Indonesian Human Rights scene is highly desirable
  • A familiarity with the UK either through work or study
