Main purpose of job:

This is an exciting time to join the Department for International Trade in Australia.  The work we do has real impact on jobs and growth across the UK and Australia. Our mission is to help UK businesses export, drive inward and outward investment, negotiate market access and trade deals and to champion free trade.  This role will will see you working as part of a small, dynamic team to support the delivery of a high profile progamme of activity in support of the Senior Business Relationship Manager in Brisbane.  

You will assist in working with UK and Australian companies to highlight and showcase events and activities that support the opportunities across Queensland in both trade and investment.  Working across a range of sectors including infrastructure, tech, energy and climate change priorities you will support on market research, business set-up assistance, sector information and expansion support to high-growth businesses in Australia and the UK.

The job holder will report to the Senior Business Relationship Manager based in Brisbane providing them with general administration, marketing and event support and form part of a wider network across the UK Government in Australia.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

This exciting and engaging role will work to deliver the benefits to UK and Australian companies coming from the first new Free Trade Agreement that the UK will sign after leaving the European Union.  Working along with the Senior Business Relationship Manager you will work with UK companies exporting to Australia and Australian companies seeking to expand into the UK. 

You will deliver a strategic approach to company enquiries, working with each one to assess their suitability for UK government support then assist them on the ground in Queensland.  This will be achieved through account management, project management, relationship management, research and administration of the Department’s data needs.

Essential to the role will be the ability to communicate information and materials to each company.  The role requires collaboration through a virtual team structure in the Australian network (colleagues are located in Perth, Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney), working with UK-based sector team colleagues and UK regional team colleagues.  

The jobholder will report directly to the Senior Business Relationship Manager to provide administrative support, event management and assistance with marketing and comms.  You will be supporting the delivery of a range of sector initiatives liaising across the network, the marketing and communications team, and the wider regional APAC team where appropriate and required.

The role will also require event planning, management and attendance, as well as relationship building at industry forums, and will require the ability to communicate effectively.  An ability to network, establish strong relationships within the business community, and other industry multipliers to actively support and leverage outcomes will be viewed favourably. 

Essential on arrival:

  • Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate field
  • A minimum of one years’ work experience in business, ideally in an international & B2B context, business development or market research.
  • Strong inter-personal, networking, presentation and communication skills
  • Strong research and analytical skills with capacity to collate and synthesis information from a wide variety of sources and tailor information to diverse audiences
  • Good knowledge of the Australian business environment
  • Ability to deliver to ambitious targets and outcomes
  • Proactive and enthusiastic with a self-starter mind-set
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team
  • High level organisational skills and ability to work at pace under pressure to achieve results

Language requirements:  

Language: English

Level of language required: Fluent  

  • Some knowledge of the UK’s business environment, and some regional centres of the UK.
  • Some knowledge of the processes involved in overseas company expansions (foreign direct investment and international trade (exports)).
  • Competency and experience with Microsoft Teams
  • Experience with research intelligence tools, such as IBISWorld and customer relations management systems
