The British Embassy in Stockholm is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Trade Manager (maternity cover) to join its Department for International Trade (DIT) team, to oversee and deliver trade work in Sweden and were synergies arise in sectors across Europe.

DIT promotes British trade and investment around the world; helps to build an appetite for British goods and services globally; and works to encourage foreign investment into the UK. DIT also brings together policy, promotion and financial expertise to break down barriers to trade & investment and to help businesses to succeed. The DIT team in Sweden comprises of 16 people based in Stockholm. The team works with both Swedish investors and British companies doing business in Sweden.

The role of the Trade Manager (TM) is to provide strategic direction for trade development in Sweden, working with colleagues across Europe North and other European markets.

Delivery of services is via its campaigns in various sectors and prosperity activities the department has identified as key opportunities for business development. The job holder will provide guidance, coaching and management to the trade team and will have direct line management responsibilities for 3 Senior Trade Advisers. The TM will oversee the trade team and its shared goals of fulfilling DIT strategic targets whilst leading and delivering on one of DIT Sweden’s strategic campaigns.

In parallel, the job holder will seek to expand networks of commercial partners in Sweden, looking to uncover the next market opportunities for UK business. As with all DIT positions, there will be a focus on working collaboratively with colleagues across the Embassy team - on policy, science & innovation and Visit Britain - to maximise opportunities for the UK. The work will be varied and demanding and the successful candidate will need to be a flexible, committed self-starter, able to juggle priorities and to work on demanding timelines. The job holder will support the DIT Country Director.

Main responsibilities will include:

  • Ensure knowledge of sectors is up to date and ready to provide authoritative advice to a range of internal and external stakeholders. Developing and maintaining a national network of contacts in conjunction with colleagues and deliver market entry activities commissioned by UK companies which can include market research, organisation of events and visit programmes. Lead one of the main sector campaigns for Sweden and work across the region;
  • Deliver results by building and maintaining a network of local contacts in range of sectors. Identify leads and opportunities for British business. Horizon spot to ensure constant sector development, ensuring resource is being used effectively;
  • Support DIT colleagues and wider Embassy campaigns, author briefs for VIP visits and other governmental communication. Undertake and ensure that administration tasks are completed, providing regular written reports on activities and record data on CRM system;
  • Identify leads and opportunities for British business and deliver a range of services to support the delivery of DIT country plan;
  • Coach and oversee the trade team to ensure aspirations and targets are met and ensuring a quality product for UK clients and Swedish contacts. Manage the inflow of work ensuring an even spread of activity across the team. Line management of 3 Senior Trade Advisers;
  • Work with internal department finance, delivery of forecasts, budgets and spend; 
  • Contribute to the wider DIT activity and Embassy team.
  • Fluency in English and Swedish (both oral and written);
  • University degree, Business/Economics or applicable subject;
  • Minimum 5 years of business development experience;
  • Proven and formal line management experience;
  • A self-starter, with the ability to organise self and work effectively;
  • Collaborative with the ability to support colleagues and share information and knowledge;
  • Reliable, responds proactively to changing priorities;
  • Client and stakeholder focused with the ability to network across industries;
