Main purpose of job:

To play a leading role facilitating greater trade between the UK and the Republic of Korea. You will have an excellent understanding of a wide range of market access issues (tariff and non-tariff), and liaise closely with the wider Embassy staff, the business community and the British Chamber of Commerce in Korea (BCCK).

As the UK prepares to leave the European Union, you will have an important role to play supporting a smooth transition from the EU-Korea Free Trade Agreement to the bilateral agreement, maximizing FTA uptake and facilitating implementation.

You will also be the lead officer on the agriculture, food and drink sectors in the Embassy’s Trade team.

This is a maternity cover vacancy.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Market Access (70%)

  • Support advocacy on priority market access issues (Non-Tariff Measures). Take the lead, when necessary, with the companies concerned. Briefing Embassy/HMG colleagues.
  • Manage the Embassy’s Market Access Digital Service. Liaise with Embassy, DIT, business and BCCK colleagues to maintain an accurate, prioritised record of market access issues, develop mitigation strategies.
  • Attend both internal and external market access meetings, including with business, EU commercial Counsellors and the BCCK. Provide clear summaries of the key issues and actions to be taken.
  • Develop networks of relevant stakeholders (on market access & trade facilitation issues). Foster close relationships with the group.
  • Customs: Take lead on understanding import processes and practices – developing good relationships with relevant Korean authorities, providing advice and answering queries of UK companies. Take responsibility for up-skilling DIT colleagues.
  • Support the bilateral UK Korea trade talks and other trade policy initiatives. Work closely with Embassy colleagues and the BCCK to ensure that businesses are fully informed of progress and changes – where appropriate.

Agriculture, Food & Drink Sector lead (25%)

  • As the agriculture, food and drink sector lead in the Trade Team, provide strategic advice and regulatory support to UK exporters and UK government to facilitate UK exports to South Korea.
  • Liaising with the BCCK, as appropriate, to support the promotion of UK brands in the sector.

Corporate (5%)

  • Play a role in the wider corporate activity of the Embassy, including crisis preparedness.
  • Supporting the upskilling of colleagues in relation to Market Access issues.
  • Experience of international relations and trade including business development and market access issues
  • Experience of import/export practice or policy
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to distil complex commercial issues
  • Strong IT literacy
  • Experience working for international or governmental organisations.
  • Knowledge of international trade policy
  • Knowledge of Korean commercial legislation and processes
  • Experience of agriculture and food trade
  • Knowledge and experience of policy and regulations of agriculture and food sector
  • Event and customer management skills

Normal working hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00 – 17:15 (17:00 on Fridays). While some evening work and travel overseas (which might include weekends) and within Korea is required, we promote family-friendly flexible working opportunities, where operational and security needs allow.
