The British Embassy in Bucharest is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit a NCA Local Liaison Adviser.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) leads UK law enforcement's fight to cut serious and organised crime. The NCA has national and international reach and facilitates cooperation between UK and International Law Enforcement Agencies and partners. The NCA team in Romania is part of the International Liaison Officers Network. The main purpose of the job is to provide adequate support to the NCA liaison officers at post. The person recruited for this role will be responsible for carrying out a range of administrative duties as well as a variety of other tasks detailed below.

The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work in an environment where time-critical actions can make great demands upon staff; this means that the post can sometimes be both exciting and challenging. The job requires proven administrative and organisational skills, and the ability to manage confidential matters.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provision of written and spoken translation services for the NCA Liaison Officer and communicating with officials from Romania and Moldova’s law enforcement agencies and ministries on behalf of the Liaison Office;
  • Attending meetings across Romania, Moldova and on occasions other countries with a diverse range of law enforcement partners and senior officials from all levels of government and provide interpretation;
  • Drafting operational Information for partnership agencies both in the UK, Romania and Moldova;
  • Flexibility to work out of hours and also travel at short notice, including weekends if necessary;
  • Managing the daily running of the office, including controlling locally managed budget and accounts. Finance and Procurement (acting as PRISM requisitioner);
  • Assistance in general support duties;
  • Organise and support visits and conferences of partners to Romania, Republic of Moldova, the UK and elsewhere. Ensure high level attendance, manage logistics, timetables and agendas;
  • Liaise with partners within the Embassy to enhance the NCA “one platform” approach through joint working;
  • Work across teams within the Embassy with stakeholders who have common areas of interest;
  • Formulate, obtain funding, implement and manage bilateral projects on capacity building and public education;

  • Fluency (written and spoken) in English and Romanian;
  • Good IT skills and ability to use (including MS Vista, Word, Outlook, Excel, internet);
  • Meet the requirements to obtain UK security clearance;
  • A team player, able to work with other members of the Embassy and External partners;
  • Strong organisational skills for document and record management;
  • Ability to respect the confidentiality of work issues;
  • Ability to interpret and translate documents from Romanian to English and vice versa;
  • Ability to work under pressure, meet tight deadlines and find flexible innovative solutions;


  • Previous work experience in a law enforcement environment;
  • Experience in working in an international environment;

This is a full-time, fixed-term contract for 24 months (35 hours net per week), which may be extended by a mutual agreement. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for agreed extra hours worked.

The annual leave entitlement is 21 days per year pro rata and the Embassy also enjoys a maximum of 14 Romanian / UK public holidays per year.

Monthly salary is 5,584 RON gross. In addition, staff are entitled to a 13th month salary pro rata and may receive a performance related bonus at year end. Staff also receive meal vouchers and a monthly subscription to a medical centre. An individual personal development plan will be agreed with the successful candidate, which may include training outside Romania.

For your information whilst the Emergency Ordinance 79/2017 is in place the job holder will receive a gross monthly compensation bonus of RON 1,111.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance, and satisfactory completion of a probationary period of 45 calendar days.
