Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Bamako is part of a worldwide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The British Embassy is fairly new – established in 2015 – but with a strong aid portfolio and political interest in Mali. The Technical Works Group Assistant role will help ensure the Embassy platform performs to the highest level maintaining the estate and enforcing high health and safety standards.


Roles and responsibilities:

  • Maintenance of the Embassy Estates including carrying out/supervising a wide range of electrical, plumbing, painting, repair and maintenance work. Including: 
  • Repairs and improvements of offices, staff amenities and residential properties to ensure that the estate is electrically safe, functional and compliant with Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) standards.
  • Carrying out preventive maintenance work.  
  • Technical Works Group (TWG) helpdesk lead, processing Technical Works Requests, maintaining the log, also first line response to customer-assigning emergency requests, sometimes out of hours calls (for which appropriate recompense will be made), and following up contractor calls.
  • Checking compliance and completed work.
  • Assist in Procurement in accordance with FCO rules also purchasing maintenance work materials and maintaining stores’ records and inventory of Embassy assets.
  • Assist external contractors appointed to do maintenance work at the Embassy.
  • Assist in liaising with landlords and public sector utility companies to process effectively required maintenance jobs.
  • Administration work maintaining estate records and TWG Key Performance indicators.
  • Work with the Corporate Services Team and completing general administrative duties as required.
  • Assist in the management of the transport pool as required
  • Administer Logistics and Freight forward formalities
  • Performs such other duties as may be required.

  • Have the ability to work independently and without supervision and when called upon to work within a close team.
  • Workable knowledge of building maintenance/construction including some formal certification.
  • Knowledge and experience in other technical areas and certification (e.g.: electrical works, carpentry, painting, vehicle maintenance etc.);
  • Good track record of Customer Care;
  • Strong time management, self-starter skills and ability to work under pressure;
  • Previous experience in working both as part of a team and unsupervised;
  • IT skills - Good knowledge of Microsoft Office;
  • French language skills – Good
  • English language skills

Working patterns:

Working hours are from 9:00am to 17:30 Monday to Thursday and 9:00 to 12:30 on Fridays.  A 35 hour week.  Annual leave is 24 days in addition to 14 public holidays annually.
