The Manager of the Creative and Consumer team is part of the Technology, Lifesciences and Consumer Cluster. Based in the British Consulate General in Sydney, the successful candidate will manage a small team across the UK Government’s ANZ network to support UK businesses to export or expand their business across the region. This role will initially lead on:
- Boosting UK exports in agriculture, food and drink and consumer goods
- Strategies to help Australian and New Zealand businesses across the retail & logistics, education, creative industries and consumer sectors to source best fit and innovative suppliers from the UK
- Promoting the UK’s food, drink, consumer goods and agritech capabilities, identifying emerging trends and opportunities for UK companies and supporting them export into ANZ
DBT works flexibly and collaboratively and the successful applicant can expect to work with and on other sectors while a part of the team. The sectoral focus of this role may change in future years depending on business needs.
The successful candidate will be able to effectively lead a small team across several markets and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills. They will be able to proactively build trusted and impactful relationships with multiple stakeholders across government and within industry and will be a confident communicator capable of exercising judgement and discretion with commercial in confidence data.

Business Development
Build and Key Account Manage a network across business and government in the UK and ANZ. Deliver regular and meaningful engagement with with key ANZ businesses, industry bodies and regulators in priority sectors to provide support for market development plans for UK businesses.
Market Promotion & Pipeline Development
Represent the UK Government at meetings, events and policy forums. Project lead and deliver events in ANZ to promote UK expertise and businesses, including webinars, trade missions, exhibitions and bespoke networking events. Track, evaluate and report on outcomes of activities. Collaborate across the UK in ANZ and wider UK Government to deliver UK strategies and objectives.
Market Shaping & Strategy
Use active research and analytical skills, knowledge and networks to understand, communicate and advise on the strategic opportunities ANZ for UK industries and businesses. Promote the short-term benefits of FTAs to businesses and simultaneously develop longer-term plans to influence ANZ market development in line with UK interests. Develop and deliver plans to tackle specific market access barriers for UK businesses in ANZ.
Management and Leadership
Line manage two direct reports providing stretching objectives, coaching and on the job development opportunities to build team capability. Lead and contribute to internal discussions and strategies to bring together trade, investment and policy engagement on priority sectors.
The role may require attendance at events throughout ANZ, the UK and wider Asia Pacific region. Therefore some flexibility for working out of hours may be required.
The role is similar in content and seniority to others in the DBT and wider UK in Australia Network in Australia. People applying for this position will be considered for other vacancies in the Network.
Resources managed (staff and expenditure):
2 x EO trade officer
Management of a small trade budget support and events budget.
- Management experience or evidence of strong leadership potential
- Self Starter – must be able to work at a high level of intensity on own initiative using judgement, strong problem solving skills, and displaying resilience.
- Excellent interpersonal skills – ability to work closely with team leaders and help senior management drive accountability, deal with any difficult situations with tact and diplomacy and a high degree of confidentiality when required to achieve desired outcomes.
- Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines.
- Must be confident in dealing with business, senior figures, Ministers and their offices.
- Industry capability or experience in the following sectors is desirable but not essential: retail & logistics, education, creative industries, agriculture, food and drink and consumer goods
Salary is at AU$ 119,072 per annum (paid out monthly), plus 11% superannuation.
Appointment is subject to an AFP records check and UK security clearance.
Must have an existing right to work in Australia.
A security check (and clearance) may be required prior to employment.
Staff recruited locally by the British Consulate General and its Consulates is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Australian employment law. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses.

Working Patterns:
Full time employment (38 hrs), with occasional out of working hours events and travel.

There will be a requirement for domestic and international travel as appropriate. Due to time differences and the nature of the role there will be some calls and work outside of core office hours.
