Main Purpose of Job:

The UK became ASEAN’s 11th Dialogue Partner (DP) in August. The task now is to use our new DP status to underpin the UK’s goal of establishing strong, enduring UK strategic engagement in the Indo-Pacific as a permanent pillar of our international policy. 

The UK Mission to ASEAN was established in 2019. We are a high-performing team and much of our delivery is based on building relationships with ASEAN members and other Dialogue Partners. The growing UKMis ASEAN team is responsible for leading this burgeoning relationship and ensuring we deliver the ambitious ASEAN-UK Plan of Action 2022-2026.  

This role sits in the Political Security team, which is responsible for delivering the political security commitments in the ASEAN-UK Plan of Action, liaising with the ASEAN Secretariat, ASEAN Member States and other partners, organising key set-piece meetings such as the annual ASEAN-UK Joint Cooperation Committee (Ambassador level), Senior Officials Meeting (Director General level) and the UK Foreign Secretary’s meeting with the ASEAN Foreign Ministers. 

The successful candidate will be required to handle a broad range of tasks, working flexibly and with significant autonomy to help drive the ASEAN-UK relationship. What will the Jobholder be Expected to Achieve:

  • Support the UK Mission to ASEAN to broaden and deepen the UK-ASEAN relationship through political engagement. 
  • Monitor, analyse and report on political security developments relating to ASEAN.
  • Contribute to policy development through researching and analysing issues and recommending new or amended processes and procedures.
  • Develop a good working relationship with members of the ASEAN Secretariat and seek to develop connections with working level contacts in ASEAN Member State and Dialogue Partner Missions in Jakarta to increase UKMis ASEAN’s understanding of their positions on policy areas.
  • d on the delivery and be an expert in the Peace and Reconciliation and Good Governance and Human Rights sections of the ASEAN-UK Plan of Action (found on ASEAN website) and. This will include gathering information from ASEAN bodies, the aforementioned representational work and liaising with UK Government Departments to identify opportunities for activities of mutual benefit to the UK and ASEAN.
  • As part of this, the jobholder would take on the day-to-day management and monitoring of our new ASEAN Women, Peace and Security Programme with the support of UKMis ASEAN’s Programme team, as well as do some representational work e.g., the previous jobholder delivered the UK’s interventions at quarterly meetings of the Advisory Group on ASEAN Women, Peace and Security.
  • The exact remit of this role may change over time as the split of portfolios between team members is adjusted according to workload and interests; there is also potential to put yourself forward for areas you find of particular interest.  
  • Support the organisation of key set-piece meetings and visits, including liaising with the ASEAN Secretariat, ASEAN Member States and other partners. The job holder will also be required to write briefings for the Ambassador or visiting Minister and records of these/other meetings. 
  • The jobholder will need to respond flexibility to business needs as and when necessary.

  • Experience of writing reports and analysing and summarising information

  • English

The British Embassy/Consulate offers a competitive remuneration package including:

Normal working hours are 39.5 per week (gross), 7.30am to 4.00pm (Monday-Thursday) and 7.30am to 1pm (Friday). The team operates a ‘core hours’ policy of 1030am to 230pm with individual flexibility around that and we are open to requests to work condensed hours, subject to business need.

Starting 1 January 2023, all Embassy and UKMis ASEAN staff (including PAGS), should work at the office for at least three days a week, with the option of working from home for up to two days per week. Days that are spent out of the office on external calls or work travel won’t count against that limit. Working from home because you are having to self-isolate due to COVID equally wouldn’t count.

Open to permanent residents or those with right to work. Interstate applicants will be required to meet their own travel and relocation expenses. No accommodation or relocation expenses are payable in connection with this position.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy Jakarta are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Indonesian employment law.
