Political

Washington is the UK’s highest-profile Embassy working on our most important bilateral relationship. You will support our effort in reporting on US internal politics at a time of unprecedented political change – providing political research on polling and key contacts. You will play a vital role in the machinery of the bilateral relationship, including Honours, the International Leaders Programme and administering political projects. You will lead on providing administrative support to Political Section and managing the critical functions that keep the team moving.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Political Research (20%)

  • Produce   regular research on political developments and campaigns for the Political   Section (including Congressional Team) and London customers.
  • Keep track of polling data and produce the team’s weekly polling email on e.g.   Trump’s approval ratings.
  • Wider Political Section research to support reporting and contact building efforts.
  • Build and maintain the Political Section’s contact database.

 

Bilateral Relationship (20%)

  • Support and Administration of the UK Honours system within the US:
    • Maintain records of all submissions   to the UK and inventory of honours material including warrants and insignia.
    • Support the Deputy Head of Section   in ensuring high quality and timely submissions from the US Network (network of British consulates across the US) and Washington Counsellors.
    • Administer   the International Leaders Programme (projects to help identify and support   future leaders) in the US:
      • Liaise with US Network on bids, work   with selected individuals to arrange travel, programmes etc.
      • Management of US ILP alumni network.
      • Cover and report on an area of US   Politics – to be decided in consultation with Head and Deputy Head of   Section.

 

Team Support (30%)

  • Administrative support to Political Section (transport bookings, ad-hoc scheduling, ensuring team members have the right resources to do their job).
  • Managing visit programmes for visitors who do not qualify for Senior Visits Office  support.
  • Produce draft and final visit programmes and arrange accommodation/transport.
  • Other administrative support for the Section as appropriate.
  • Management of Political Section intern.

 

Project & Programme Management   (20%)

  • Ad-hoc political projects – such as organising the annual Political Officers’ conference or supporting the US Network on the Future Talent Pipeline.

 

Budgets (10%)

  • Forecasting and profiling the Political Team spend; Monitoring spend throughout FY; Resolving issues with the allocated spend.
  • Represent the Section on the Embassy Finance Committee.
  • Devise a portfolio based approach to funding for Political Section projects (e.g. Congressional Delegations) so cross-HMG funding can be sought from the most appropriate source.

Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders or A or NATO visa holders with EAD cards*.
