The British Embassy in Azerbaijan is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for an Political Officer to provide tailored political reporting, analysis and advance on a broad range of domestic and international issues to British diplomats in the Embassy and across the FCDO network. Areas of interest include internal political dynamics, regional affairs, conflict issues and human rights.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will work as part of a dynamic political section, helping to deliver UK foreign policy objectives in Azerbaijan and promote UK values.  The jobholder will be a key member of the wider embassy team and will provide local insight and knowledge about the political and social environment in Azerbaijan to British diplomats including the Ambassador.  The jobholder will also be responsible for producing briefing for British diplomats in London, visiting senior colleagues as well as UK ministers. The successful candidate will also liaise with key stakeholders both in government and outside government, using networking to gain access to advance UK interests. 

  • Produce regular reporting on key political developments and analysis on future trends and trajectories;
  • Build and maintain a broad network of contacts across government, political parties, academia and civil society to broaden and deepen HMG’s understanding, reach and influence in Azerbaijan;
  • Represent the embassy at events organised by government and civil society;
  • Arrange meetings for HMA, DHM and high-level visitors with senior interlocutors, proactively recommend useful contacts for British diplomats to meet with to advance UK interests/understanding;
  • Create and deliver regional visits plans for British diplomats to expand UK knowledge and influence beyond Baku;
  • Oversight of the Political Team’s travel budget and flexible cross-team working to cover policy issues in colleagues’ absence, including press and media issues;
  • Research opportunities for project initiatives which work towards embassy objectives.  Monitor and evaluate and manage the budget for a modest project portfolio;
  • Delivery of a number of priority Embassy strategies including on gender, disability and other human rights issues;
  • Real time translation of Azerbaijani or Russian to English for UK diplomats in official meetings or media interviews;
  • Additional responsibilities.
  • Fluent written and spoken English, Azerbaijan and Russian (minimum level required C1 under the CEFR or equivalent*);
  • Experience in working for a diplomatic mission, NGO or other relevant organisation related to political matters;
  • A degree in a field relevant to the position, such as politics or international relations;
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • A broad network of contacts across government, civil society and NGOs;
  • Proactive self-starter;
  • Seeking out opportunities to create effective changes;
  • Good team player;
  • Ability to work under pressure, prioritise and handle multitasks;
  • Strong IT skills, in particular Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel.
  • Project management experience.

This is a full-time permanent position, five working days, 40 hours net per week.

The salary is 2,173.86 USD gross per month and shall be paid in AZN monthly.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Azerbaijan is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service of the FCDO according to local labour legislation.
