Main purpose of job:

To support the Climate, Energy and Future Cities policy team in the coordination of the Climate Action and Sustainable Development policy portfolios at the British Embassy in Mexico City. 

The CASDO will work closely with the COP26 and International Climate Finance teams, reporting to the Head of Climate, Energy and Cities manager. He or she will be responsible for the areas of mitigation and adaptation policy, green finance, sustainable mobility and sustainable development related matters, in line with the implementation of the Partnership for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth signed by Mexico and the UK in 2019.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity that requires a mix of policy analysis and project management, as well as excellent interpersonal skills to engage with a wide range of stakeholders on behalf of the UK Government. The successful candidate will work collaboratively across the Embassy and its consulates, as well as with UK-based directorates.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • To act as the Embassy’s main point of contact for the progression of our mitigation and adaptation, green finance, sustainable mobility and sustainable development  policy portfolios, supporting our strategies to accelerate climate action in Mexico by:
    • Timely identifying, flagging and reporting on developments that can impact/influence our political and programmatic strategies both to colleagues in the Embassy and in the UK;
    • Nourishing and, where possible, growing the Embassy’s stakeholder network in these sectors;
    • Leading on small projects and initiatives to advance our objectives in these portfolios. The CASDO will display good quality project management skills in the delivery of these tasks;
    • Represent the Embassy in external events;
    • Produce and communicate policy briefs to a wide range of audiences. 
  • Support the implementation of the Embassy’s COP26 strategy for Mexico working closely with the COP26 Manager and Coordinator, particularly in the delivery of the finance, ZEVs and nature Campaigns.
  • Support the successful implementation of UK ODA climate and environment related funding by acting as a sounding board identifying risks and opportunities for our programmes, commenting on deliverables produced by delivery partners as relevant, advising on new and existing initiatives on an ad hoc basis.
  • To hold a corporate responsibility objective, contributing to the Embassy’s wider corporate agenda and values. 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field (Climate and Environment Science, Political Science, Economy, International Relations, etc)
  • A minimum of 2+ years of experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or local governments, international organisations or agencies, preferably in climate change
  • Strong understanding of at least two of the following portfolios: mitigation, adaptation, green finance, sustainable mobility and sustainable development with relevant experience including from university or previous professional work experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong writing skills with the capability of flexing between styles and formats, ideal to have experience in writing speeches, ministerial briefings, opinion columns, reports, bulletins and scripts for social media and external communications
  • Excellent analytical skills; he or she will have to provide recommendations to senior colleagues, often with little notice
  • Language: written and spoken English and Spanish
  • Level of language required: minimum level required C1 under CEFRL or equivalent
  • Knowledge of financial/budget management principles or previous financial management experience
  • Knowledge or experience of project management and relevant skills
  • Master’s Degree in a relevant field

This is a fixed-term contract with the possibility for renewal. The current contract ends 31 March 2022. 

Currently, work is remote; jobholder will be expected to go into the Embassy once normal operations resume. 

Candidates must be able to live and work in Mexico in their own right.

The successful candidate will be subject to a security clearance and professional reference checks.

Employees who are not liable to pay local income tax on their Mission salary, eg some non-local national staff and some spouses or partners of UK diplomatic staff, will have their salaries abated by an equivalent amount.
