View Vacancy - Political Advisor
Main purpose of job:
The Political Advisor will assist the Political Officer and the Political Secretary in reporting on political developments affecting UK interests in Colombia and will support the Embassy’s work on Human Rights through prioritised cases. He or she will provide support to all members of the team through administrative support such as the organisation on all aspects of Inward and Political visits, events’ logistics, Diptel actions and assistance with special visa requests.
The jobholder will be able to express correctly in English and Spanish, with good organisational and communication skills. A background and proven interest in political issues is desirable.
Roles and responsibilities:
1. Assisting with research and analysis on political issues and human rights (40%)
- Provide concise, timely and well balanced research on the latest political and peace process developments affecting UK interests and priorities in Colombia. Follow closely the campaigns for the 2018 elections.
- Contributing to regular informal briefs regarding developments when required.
- Maintaining awareness of developments at the regional and national level.
2. Supporting the team’s administration and stakeholder management (35%)
- Monitoring and reporting the require post’s action through a database.
- Support the organisation on all aspects of Inward and Political visits.
- Support the Political Team with events (logistics, administrative work).
- Organise meetings for HMA (Her Majesty's Ambassador) and the political team.
- Represent the political team at key meetings.
- Increase range of contacts on key issues for the UK, including Human Rights, Peace, elections, National and Regional Politics and Security.
- Coordinate and monitor the team’s assistance with visa requests from key contacts.
3. Human Rights Support (20%)
- Support the Embassy’s work on Human Rights through a continuous follow-up of Human Rights cases.
- Maintain the priority cases’ spreadsheet updated.
- Responsible contact for parliamentary liaison.
4. Learning and Development (5%)
- Identifying opportunities to improve existing skills or develop new ones.
- Attending learning and development events.
- Actively participating in the performance appraisal process.
- Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, International Relations, Law or related subject.
- Up to two years experience in Colombian Political Issues.
- Evidence of working with limited supervision and delivering impacts.
- The job is a full-time position. The hours to be worked are 8:30am-17:00 with a one hour lunch break Monday-Thursday, and 8:30-13:30 on Fridays.
