Main purpose of job:

To lead the delivery of a portfolio of projects within the British Embassy Office Bujumbura and across the region, notably in DRC, working closely with UK embassies in the wider Great Lakes Region.   The projects include work on peacebuilding and responding to sexual and gender-based violence, with a total annual value of approx. £700,000 in Burundi, and more regionally.    The ideal candidate will need to be a confident self-starter, with the drive, determination and skills to take on, develop, and manage a portfolio of projects. 

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Contribute to the annual budget and objectives setting process for UK funds working in Burundi working closely with the Head of the British Embassy Office, the British High Commission Kigali, and the British Embassy Kinshasa.
  • Develop effective relationships with implementing partners in Burundi and in DRC, liaising closely with them to agree contracts, payment schedules, systems for project monitoring and evaluation, and quality assuring project documents.
  • Deliver effective financial management, including via accurate forecasting, quality control of financial documents received from implementers, and timely processing of payments.
  • Lead project monitoring and risk management.  Identify and recommend corrective action with partners as required.
  • Ensure financial, governance, and reporting compliance for FCO-funded projects in Burundi and DRC, including via timely responses to requests from London and Kinshasa.
  • Maintain a network with other donors and implementing partners working in similar areas in the region, to ensure that UK funded projects are well coordinated with wider international and local initiatives.
  • Support the wider delivery of UK programmes in the Great Lakes region, working closely and collaboratively with colleagues in Kinshasa, Goma, Kigali, Nairobi and Addis Ababa.
  • Respond flexibly and actively to evolving priorities and needs.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

Direct oversight of annual budget of approx. £700,000 in Burundi.

 

  • Project management experience (minimum 3 years) and good knowledge of budget management.
  • Strong IT skills; proficient in MS Office applications and use of spreadsheets.
  • Excellent English and French written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Team player, good interpersonal skills, and ability to build strong customer relationships.
  • The role requires initiative and the ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Strong organisational skills and time management to meet deadlines.



  • Experience working in an international environment, such as an embassy, UN agency, or international NGO.
  • Knowledge of Kirundi is beneficial but not essential.

The UK maintains a small presence in Burundi via the British Embassy Office in Bujumbura.  The Office supports the work of Her Majesty’s Ambassador to Burundi with residence in Kigali, contributing to wider international efforts to improve security, governance, prosperity, development and human rights in the Great Lakes Region.  We are currently looking to recruit an experienced project manager to join the office.


  • The successful candidate will need to be able to travel to Kenya, Rwanda and DRC (any visa costs will be covered by British Embassy Office)
  • The position is a 12 month Fixed Term Contract with possibility of renewal
