Main purpose of job:

To provide a first class, safe and efficient driver services at the British Embassy Khartoum. To perform duties to the highest standard, displaying excellent driving skills at all times by following local traffic regulations and FCO policy and procedure to ensure passenger(s)/driver’s and other road users safety.

 

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Provide transport services to all Embassy staff, families and official visitors including VIPs to /from meetings etc and on field visits when required
  • Ensure the safety and security of the vehicle and passengers in your care
  • Driving a variety of vehicles, including 4x4’s, mini-buses, lorries, pick-ups, motorbikes and other mechanical vehicles
  • Effectively communicate with visitors and local hosts and make effective judgement to ensure good time keeping
  • Carrying out daily vehicle checks and cleaning of the official vehicle to ensure the vehicle is roadworthy and presentable before start of a journey
  • Maintaining an organized travel schedule and keeping an accurate record of all journeys
  • Identifying and reporting any vehicle defects as early as possible and to keep any potential risk to a minimum
  • Working at night and on weekends on a rotating shift pattern and be able and willing to work at a very short notice on occasions
  • Collecting and delivering mail (diplomatic bags, invitations, etc.)
  • Public relations and facilitation ( i.e. passport registration)
  • Carrying out other duties as assigned by the Transport Management Team
  • Valid full commercial driving licence
  • At least five years of professional driving experience
  • Be familiar with various destinations including Sudanese organizations, companies, airport, hotels, banks etc.
  • Knowledge of Khartoum road network
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills
  • Good verbal communication in both English and Arabic
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work in a team under pressure
  • Ability to learn and improve
  • Ability to read a vehicle number plate at 20 feet

Experience in driving Armoured vehicles

Preferably has worked in Embassies or NGOs or has had similar experience before

Working patterns:

Successful candidates will be required to work on a rotating shift pattern over a 42.5 hour working week. There will be a roster of three shifts, morning, evening, and night shift.  This will include weekends, evenings and Public Holidays, for which set allowances will be paid.
