The British Embassy in Hungary is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. 

We are now looking for a Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) and Human Rights Senior Policy Officer in the Embassy’s Policy Team. The Officer will be responsible for delivering the UK’s policy objectives on JHA and Human Rights. This will include policy aspects of countering human trafficking, judicial and criminal cooperation and maintaining a dialogue with the Hungarian government on JHA-related aspects of the UK’s EU exit. The job-holder will also lead on the Embassy’s Human Rights portfolio. The Officer will monitor, analyse and report developments, develop and maintain contacts both in the UK and in Hungary, execute lobbying requests, represent the Embassy at key events, prepare the Embassy’s Senior Leaders for important events and meetings, draft speeches, lead on inward/outward visits in these policy areas and work with the Embassy’s communications team on messaging.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead policy work in support of UK interests in Justice and Home Affairs (JHA), including countering human trafficking and organised crime, security, judicial co-operation, and Human Rights. Monitor and report JHA and Human Rights related developments, spotting opportunities for engagement and providing policy analysis that adds value for colleagues in Budapest and London. Maintain a good link with UK law enforcement colleagues working on the same issues;
  • Develop and maintain contacts both in the UK and in Hungary, including in the governments, NGOs, religious organisations and civil society, targeting key decision-makers and influencers.  Represent the UK’s position, including executing lobbying requests in a timely fashion;
  • Prepare the Ambassador and the Deputy Ambassador for external events by providing lines to take and draft speeches. Represent the Embassy at lectures, conferences and actively participate in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office’s JHA’s attachés network;
  • Lead work on organising inward & outward official visits and assisting in organising meetings and events. Contribute to the Senior EU Exit Policy Officer’s work on JHA and Human Rights;
  • Work with the Embassy’s communications team to compose and distribute human rights related messages. Provide policy advice and content for the Embassy’s public communication channels. Work with colleagues across the Embassy and contribute to the design and implementation of existing and new policy plans.






















  • At least 2 years’ experience of working in policy;
  • Knowledge of the Hungarian JHA and/or Human Rights landscape;
  • Experience of organising visits, meetings and events;
  • Excellent command of English and Hungarian (both oral and written);
  • Proven ability to develop relationships with customers and stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills;
  • Strong in delivering results, somemtimes to tight deadlines;
  • Reliable, able to work in a team with changing priorities with a flexible approach;
  • Strong IT computer skills using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Office and Internet;
  • University or College degree (preferably in International Relations, Politics, Economics or similar).

  • Understanding of the UK’s JHA and Human Rights priorities;
  • Proactive attitude in project and relationship management;
  • Strong drafting/writing skills.

This is a one year fixed-term contract, with the option for a mutually agreed further year.  It is a full-time position of 5 days (35 hours net per week).

Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance. You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Hungary in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy are subject to terms and conditions service according to Hungarian employment law.

Visa/passport requirements: the successful applicant must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Hungary and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
