The UK Department for International Trade (DIT) is the British Government Agency which works with UK-based businesses to ensure their success in international markets, and encourages the best overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice. DIT operates in 100 international markets and has teams in five offices in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra, Perth) and an office in Auckland, New Zealand.

Applications are invited for the role of Trade Development Manager at the UK’s Department for International Trade office in the British Consulate-General in Auckland.

The Trade Development Manager will be responsible for helping UK companies enter the New Zealand market. The role will involve developing and delivering an effective engagement strategy that evaluates and delivers on market opportunity for UK companies in Infrastructure, Transport (inc Automotive) and Sports sectors. 

This role will also assume responsibility for planning and arranging visits for DIT VIPs and senior DIT officials from the UK. There will be a need to work in close collaboration with the DIT teams based in Sydney, Melbourne, and Perth to deliver DIT priorities and contribute to achievement of export win targets.

The Trade team in Auckland works closely with the British High Commission in Wellington on the UK’s wide prosperity agenda. For visits and programmes on prosperity issues, the job holder will liaise with the High Commission visits team in Wellington.


Position responsibilities:

  • Working collaboratively with sector teams in Australia to identify relevant senior operational contacts in New Zealand in the  Infrastructure, Transport (inc Automotive) and Sports sectors, developing sector propositions which accurately reflect the scale and value of the opportunity for UK companies in these sectors.
  • Develop and deliver a strategic engagement plan to establish and maintain relationships with key stakeholders in market that will benefit UK companies doing business in New Zealand.
  • Conduct business research, produce sector reports, evaluate and disseminate business opportunities and market intelligence to support UK firms make informed decisions about opportunities in the   Infrastructure, Transport (inc Automotive) and Sports sectors to help them achieve real exports.
  • As an integral part of the ANZ sector network contribute to export win targets through engagement with the right companies who are ready to do business.
  • Represent DIT and FCO effectively at events in the NZ market, meet and brief UK visitors independently on the market and assist with the development of market entry strategies.
  • Lead on planning and logistics for DIT related VIP visits and visits by other senior DIT officials.
  • Track, evaluate and report on outcomes of activities.  Maintain accurate and up to date records and reporting in data management platforms.
  • Contribute to the corporate agenda of the Auckland Consulate and the whole New Zealand network. 

The successful candidate will be comfortable working with multiple stakeholders to deliver results that benefit the UK economy.

The ability to prioritise workloads effectively and achieve corporate targets, ensuring an appropriate level of assistance is provided to customers is essential for this role.

Work effectively as part of a wider virtual network team, managing expectations accordingly, and contributing to campaigns across a range of sectors.

Strong communication skills are essential in working with customers, colleagues, and team members. The ability to work proactively and build networks and contacts across a range of organisations is also required.

Good organisational and programme arranging skills. 

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate strengths and provide evidences of the required competences at the interview.

Salary is $80,449 per annum (paid out monthly), plus up to 5% superannuation subsidy on a $ for $ basis. The role also offers great learning and development opportunities, through formal training, on-the-job learning and taking on new challenges. 

Appointment is subject to achieving a clean New Zealand Police records search and UK security clearance.

Appointment is subject to a 90 day trial period pursuant to section 67A of the Employment Relations Act 2000.
