The British Embassy in Ljubljana is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic, consular and Defence interests overseas and is now looking for a Assistant to Defence Attache.

The purpose of the role is to provide administrative support to the British Defence Attaché to Ljubljana and contribute to building on our strong bilateral and multilateral defence cooperation with Slovenia.

The jobholder will be located in Ljubljana and will report to the Defence Attaché, who is based in Vienna but visits regularly. The job holder will become an integral part of the friendly and supportive Embassy team, and will be able to contribute to wider Embassy work and access learning and development activity.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • To carry out day-to-day administrative and planning assistance, including support for training exercises, projects and to coordinate and process requests for diplomatic clearances (including over flight clearances);

 

  • To maintain and develop contacts in Slovenia and the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), defence industry and others, and provide advice and suggestions to the Defence Attaché to further enhance the bilateral relationship;

 

  • To plan and organise Defence Attaché’s regular visits and lead on VIP defence visits, in close cooperation with the UK MOD;

 

  • To make accurate translations of Slovenian/English documents and interpret for the Defence Attaché, where necessary;

 

  • To produce briefing and reports on defence related issues and monitor local media.

  • At least 1 year of previous work experience in an administrative position, preferably in the defence and security field;

 

  • Excellent fluent written and spoken English and Slovenian;

 

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work co-operatively with others;

 

  • Excellent IT skills, especially database management, MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel;

 

  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills; attention to detail;
  • Experience of financial/budget administration;

 

  • Experience of stakeholder and customer management;

 

  • An understanding of the UK and Slovenian business environments, particularly the defence and security sector.

This is a temporary part-time position of 5 days (20 hours per week) for a 1 year fixed term contract with possibility of renewal, subject to a probation period of 6 months. Working hours are flexible and staff are entitled to time-off-in-lieu for extra hours worked.

The successful candidate will be subject to confirmation of a background check and security clearance.

You must have pre-existing work authorisation for Slovenia in order to apply.
