The British Embassy in Moscow is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Current Affairs Officer.

The main purpose of the role will be to contribute to the British Embassy’s engagement in Russia by analysing trends and developments in Russia's internal and external current affairs; to proactively assist with understanding media coverage of major issues, including national and regional political developments, parliamentary business, electoral cycles, human rights, conflict issues and foreign policy, often in a fast-paced environment; to develop and facilitate meaningful links between the UK and Russia, working with UK diplomats in the Embassy's Political team.

 Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Draw on a wide range of information sources and contacts to research and analyse current affairs topics, including parliamentary issues, elections, regional politics, human rights, conflict issues and foreign policy. To monitor results of public polling information;
  • Provide support for the Political Team, such as basic translation and arranging meetings in Moscow and other regions of Russia;
  • To act as an in-house expert on aspects of Russian politics, history and culture;
  • To attend public seminars and lectures on political topics.
  • Excellent understanding of national and international current affairs (3 to 4 years of experience);
  • Proficiency in English and Russian;
  • Academic (degree) background in International and/or Political Affairs;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Strong interpersonal skills;
  • Good organisational skills;
  • Ability to work both independently (being proactive is essential) and as part of a team;
  • Flexibility and ability to deal with multiple tasks and priorities;
  • Good ability to work under pressure and at speed;
  • Availability to travel. 
  • Experience of working in an Embassy or similar environment;
  • Understanding of, or interest, in UK government politics and current affairs in a foreign policy context.

This is a full-time, permanent contract, for 5 working days, 35 hours net per week. The successful candidate will be expected to start in January 2018.

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance.

All applicants  should have a pre-existing legal status to live and work in Russia. The British Embassy does not facilitate/sponsor visa applications and work permits.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Russia is subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Russian employment law.

The monthly salary for this position is Rub 91,705 gross, B3(L) level, paid 13 times a year.
