Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy in Bangkok is part of a world-wide network of 230 Posts, representing British political, economic, Visa and Consular interests overseas.

This is a unique opportunity to join a diverse Corporate Services Team where no day is the same. As part of a job-share, you and the current DCSM – Staffing Operations will work closely with the Corporate Services Manager (CSM), our external legal advisors, managers in the Embassy and the HR Hub based in Manila to ensure effective delivery of this role. This role will also deputise for the Corporate Services Manager, representing them at meetings and providing support to other corporate services work areas.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

Operational Human Resource Management

  • Lead on:

- Ensuring country based staff terms and conditions of service are compliant with local Thai employment law

- Collaborating with the HLA (Honorary Legal Advisor), concerning local Thai Labour Law and liaise with the HR hub Manila concerning recommendations. Ensure changes are reflected in the Terms and Conditions of Service. 

- Providing statistical information and reports to internal stakeholders and other FCDO Embassies and Consulates across the region when required.

- Creation and management of HR legal reference repository on MS Teams

  • Co-manage:

- Country based staff HR policy, operations, employment terms and conditions, working closely with the regional HR Hub in Manila.

- Efforts to ensure global country based staff policy is followed (including global minimum standards).

- Delivery of confidential guidance and support to employees concerning disciplinary procedures

- Supporting activity on wellbeing and mental health

- Delivery of guidance and mentoring on HR matters to line managers and employees in conjunction with the HR Hub Manila.

  • HR Finance:

- Coordinate with the HR hub Manila concerning employee entitlements to benefits and salaries.

- Provide support to Sections during redundancy/resignations, giving advice concerning severance and redundancy payments.

- Provide employees with confidential payroll advice, e.g. deputising pay, sickness absence, unpaid leave.

  • Team Support:

- Provide cover for the Corporate Services Manager during periods of absence

- Support other members of the corporate services team as required.

- Participate in post crisis activity as a member of the Crisis Welfare Team

- Act as contact for the local staff association.

  • Other:

- All candidates must be legally able to work and reside in the country of the vacancy with the correct visa/work permit status or demonstrate eligibility to obtain the relevant permit

  • Demonstrable HR experience
  • Ability to get things done with minimal supervision.
  • Strong people skills and an ability to influence at all levels. 
  • Dynamic, well organised self-starter with excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent team working skills, with strong ability to build co-operative working relationships across a large network, including external contacts.
  • Fluent English language skills, written and spoken
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness, good judgement, can work with integrity and discretion.
  • Experience of working in an international, multi-cultural organisation, and/or experience of living and working abroad in a foreign country.
  • Knowledge of Bangkok and Thailand
  • Knowledge of FCDO policies and procedures
  • CIPD qualified
  • Basic Thai language skills

The British Embassy Bangkok encourages all staff to develop their capabilities, through both formal training (courses) and informal (job-shadowing, coaching, on-the-job training etc.). The majority of our formal L&D opportunities are drawn from FCO resources. All staff are encouraged to share their skills and experience with colleagues, through informal training (‘lunch & learn’) or coaching/mentoring. All staff are eligible for 5 L&D days a year. Attend relevant Learning and Development activities to acquire the knowledge and skills to meet the needs of the Corporate Services team and wider Embassy.

Working patterns:

Part-time role (11 hours/week, Monday to Friday) 14:30 – 16:00 Mon-Thurs, 0800 – 1300 Friday

In crisis/emergency situations work as required to support the Embassy response (sometimes on a shift pattern working unsociable hours)

This job is suitable for flexible working patterns, subject to operational requirements.
