Main purpose of job:

Our aim is to support and grow Korean investment into the UK, and help UK companies to export and expand in Korea.

The successful candidate (Maternity Cover contract) will operate across two priority sectors – Technology and Defence – working with skilled colleagues across the Embassy to both (i) provide advice and support to British Defence Industries and (ii) identify and support Korean technology companies seeking expansion into the UK. 

You will focus activity on strengthening and converting a pipeline of client across the Tech sectors; developing and maintaining relationships with a range of stakeholders; organising and delivering promotional events and activity; supporting on Ministerial and VIP visits; providing UK teams with intelligence on technology companies and trends in the Korean market; and, delivering against challenging targets to ensure the the UK continues to attract high levels of Foreign Direct Investment [FDI] and R&D from Korea.

Roles and responsibilities:

Pipeline Development and Conversion

  • Develop and deliver compelling pitches to sell the UK offer to Korean technology companies, continually updating and increasing your knowledge of the UK’s strengths in Technology and related sub-sectors.
  • Identify and implement appropriate methods for improving perceptions of the UK and generating new leads among Korean companies. These could include use of traditional and, especially, social media, seminar events, trade fairs, UK sector specialist visits, Ministerial roundtables and cooperative projects with multipliers.
  • Provide tailored support to companies seeking expansion into the UK, helping to move projects through the pipeline, and large-scale and high-growth potential firms.
  • Engage regularly with delivery partners in the UK and Korea to jointly identify and manage projects and overcome obstacles to investment.
  • Work with a range of stakeholders to identify and gather investment opportunities aligned to HMG priorities – e.g. 5G / 6G– and communicate these effectively across the Korean ecosystem.

Defence Industry

  • Support delivery of high priority, high value defence industry campaigns, working with embassy colleagues to ensure joined up approach.
  • Seek opportunities for British defence companies to interact with relevant RoK organisations to promote UK capabilities.
  • Support promotion of defence related R&D between UK companies and RoK government.

Relationship Management

  • Provide systematic account management to Korean companies seeking expansion into the UK – with a focus on the largest companies in the sector.
  • Contribute to effective prioritisation of engagement – setting out which companies to see when and how often.
  • Capture and maintain key information for major companies in “Key Account Plans”.
  • Consider new and innovative ways of maintaining close and productive client relationships
  • On defence, you will liaise with key ROK Government & Military stakeholders to support British interests and understand the competition.

Events and Activity

  • Plan and oversee the organisation of at least two promotional events per year (mix of virtual and physical).
  • Work with experts in the London team to facilitate and host expert visits.
  • Support and contribute to Ministerial and VIP activity as required.
  • Organise inward and outward visit programme including high-level government to government events both in Korea and the UK.

Providing intelligence

  • Draw from media and research outlets, combined with engagement with experts and policy leads, to track the activities and interests of relevant companies.
  • Keep the DIT investment reporting tool (“DataHub”) up to date, inputting notes from meetings and investment developments.
  • Contribute to general reporting and embassy / London reporting.

Corporate

  • Contribute to wider embassy objectives and events, including participating in post's crisis preparedness and response activities.
  • Support the improvement of life at the embassy.
  • Collaborate with other teams as priorities changes.
  • Fluent in English and Korean. Highly skilled in written and spoken communication in both languages.
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills.

The role being advertised is a fixed-term contract of 12 months to provide maternity cover. 

The British Embassy in Seoul takes learning and development seriously. Standard working hours are from 0900-1715 Monday to Thursday and 0900-1700 Friday. Flexible working, including working from home is supported.
