Overview 
The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the Trade and Investment Promotion and Negotiation organisation for the UK. We promote British trade and investment across the world, we support UK businesses overseas and attract foreign investment to our shores. We have 3,000 staff across the globe in over 100 countries. 
 
DIT divides the world into 9 regions, each led by Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner. The Latin American and the Caribbean Region is led from Sao Paulo by Jonathan Knott. The Network are represented in 19 Posts with a team of over 140 people.
 
In the Caribbean, each of our core markets (Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago) has a DIT Country Director who has responsibility all HMG trade and investment activity in this country. In many cases they also have sector responsibility and provide support and guidance to High Commissioners, Resident British Commissioners and High Commissioners in micro missions (Belize and Bahamas).  We are seeking an team member who wishes to learn more about international trade and supporting UK business success in Jamaica. This role will report into the Jamaican Country Trade Officer and will be overseen by the DIT Caribbean Director.


Main purpose of job:
To provide trade and investment support for DIT Jamaica on a temporary basis.


Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:
 
Opening Markets – You will work with the Country Trade Officer and the regional Trade Policy manager to help identify issues that inhibit access to the Jamaican market for British exporters and investors (“Market Access Barriers”) and accurately log these barriers on the Digital Market Access Service (“DMAS”).  

Trade Support –  You  will log all interactions with British companies on the CRM system” DataHub” and support the Jamaica Country Trade officer to ensure management of the most important relationships on a systematic account management basis.  Where required you will provide assistance to UK businesses by delivering information on the general economic and political situation in Jamaica and identifying relevant contacts. 

Promotion – You will research, monitor and log opportunities for UK companies in the Exporting Is Great Portal
(“EIG”) and develop, expand and maintain distribution lists across sectors to alert UK companies to opportunities in Jamaica.  You will promote these opportunities and assist preparing relevant material to help attract UK exporters and investors to Jamaica.  You will work with the communications team in Jamaica and the LATAC Marcomms team to help promote the UK offer, using material developed by DIT so as to further develop Jamaican perceptions of the creativity and innovation of British industry, showcasing the UK’s unique strengths as a destination for Jamaican overseas investment and champion global free trade and UK trade values. You will assist with planning and logistics for trade missions and trade promotion events and attend local trade exhibitions and events as required.  You will attend meetings of UK business Groups and Trade associations as required.  You will maintain the local database of UK companies and sources of supply so you are able to direct local queries accordingly.   

Delivery – You are expected to maintain a working knowledge of the Jamaican economy and political developments.  You are expected to undertake other related activities as may be assigned from time to time.  

Essential on arrival:  

Understanding of Jamaican business environment; understanding of trade and investment;  intermediate to advanced computer literacy across all MS platforms and other data platforms with the ability to learn new computer software quickly; excellent planning and administrative skills; the ability to work effectively in remote location (home); excellent written and oral communications and interpersonal skills; ability to work as a part of a larger, virtual team

Must have the legal status to live and work in Jamaica.

Desirable:  

Detail orientated;; broad understanding of the UK economy

The Department for International Trade (DIT) is the United Kingdom government department responsible for striking and extending trade agreements between the United Kingdom and foreign countries, as well as for encouraging foreign investment and export trade. As part of its People Plan, the Department for International Trade in Latin America and the Caribbean has a Learning and Development fund to support its staff to access formal learning.
