This role Reports to the British Consulate-General in Miami, & primarily involves providing consular assistance to British nationals, both tourists and residents, in Puerto Rico including following a hospitalisation, death, arrest, or other serious incident where the British government would normally offer assistance to its citizens. This role will also be appointed to support prosperity work which focuses on the advancement of HMG’s economic and commercial objectives. Due to the nature of the role, there is sometimes a requirement for assistance to be provided outside of normal working hours, including at weekends.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct consular support as required to British nationals (both tourists and resident) in Puerto Rico
  • Providing local contacts and general advice and information to the superintending post about commercial opportunities & economic developments in Puerto Rico
  • Maintain contacts with the Puerto Rican government, particularly on aspects of emergency planning, and foster excellent relations with the local tourism industry

 







                          • Fluency in both English and Spanish
                          • Administrative and customer service experience
                          • Strong written and oral communication skills
                          • Ability to create strong relationships with local government and key stakeholders within the private sector and the community
                          • Ability to meet consular service delivery standards and targets
                          • Proficiency in IT systems including Microsoft Office
                          • Willingness to, on occasion, provide assistance outside of normal working hours (including weekends)

                          This is a volunteer position and is non-salaried. However, the Consulate will pay an honorarium of $3,000 annually, and agreed expenses will be reimbursed. Training will be given and IT/telecoms infrastructure will be provided. The British Honorary Consulate in Puerto Rico is a virtual office, with no requirement for formal office space. 

                           

                           

                          Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as Honorary Consuls, persons who are US citizens or US Green Card holders. All candidates will be subject to background checks and security clearance.
