The British Consulate General in Düsseldorf is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Trade Advisor to  provide support to the Department for International Trade (DIT) team in identifying and developing trade opportunities to boost the UK economy and to support UK companies wanting to grow through export, with a particular focus on the chemicals sector.

This role will involve primarily supporting the DIT team at the British Consulate General in Düsseldorf. We are looking for someone who is enterprising, flexible, team oriented, well organised and able to pick up new issues quickly. This position is a two year fixed term contract, with the possibility of extension. We are committed to ensuring that the job holder can use this role as a development opportunity. This role will provide an excellent overview of the British - German commercial and business relationship.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

To provide support to the Senior Trade Adviser to identify and develop trade opportunities in the chemicals sector through:

  • Pro-active business development and lead generation activities involving direct contact with decision makers of companies, intermediaries and other networks;
  • Working towards delivering the UK Government’s Department of International Trade objectives with a strong focus on High Value Opportunities;
  • Identification of trading opportunities, in providing information and guidance for UK businesses on issues such as local trading conditions and in organising and delivering trade missions to target markets;
  • Build up pipeline for exports and follow up to identify successes;
  • Writing tailored market reports, based on desk research and local contact knowledge;
  • Develop an understanding of the business issues, dynamics, drivers and trends in Germany, and to understand how these factors impact the trade market, opportunities within it and the approach needed in Germany in order to achieve success;
  • Building professional networks in Germany and the UK to better understand the markets and connect clients;
  • Responding to trade related enquiries from the chemical as well as other sectors;
  • Working together with DIT colleagues in Germany and other European markets to achieve joint economic outcomes;
  • Regular contact with local trade associations, industry and clusters, distributor networks and chambers of commerce;

To support the DIT trade team. This includes:

  • Support in organising events and trade missions in both markets and the representation of UK government at these;
  • Attending appropriate trade fairs, conferences, events and seminars relevant to the sector and this role;
  • Promotional activities to promote UK exports including on digital/social media channels;
  • Draft social media content;
  • Identifying high profile marketing events/opportunities which can raise the profile of UK plc and improve the delivery of quality leads, enquiries and projects from Germany;
  • Supporting other trade team colleagues as needed on specific projects.
  • Have or be in the process of completing University-level or equivalent professional qualification;
  • Experience in market research and analysis;
  • Project Management skills;
  • Strong interpersonal and team working skills;
  • Fluent English and German, both written and spoken. To at least C2 level;
  • Ability to meet task deadlines to a consistently high standard of quality;
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities effectively and flexibly;
  • Self-starter, pro-active and collaborative spirit;
  • Good IT skills, especially MS Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
  • Previous experience working in an international business environment and/or trade promotion work;
  • Affinity or prior experience with one or more of the following sectors: Chemicals, Food & Drink, Life Sciences;
  • Knowledge of the German and UK Business Environments.

This is a full-time position of five working days 37.5 hours net (excluding unpaid breaks) per week, for an initial contract period of two years.

The British Embassy in Berlin has a strong ethos of Learning and Development, including our Learning and Development Week. In addition, there will be many opportunities to attend external seminars and events on relevant issues. This is in addition to the induction programme offered to all Embassy staff.

Visa/passport requirements: the successful applicant must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
