Scottish Development International (SDI) is the economic development agency of the Scottish Government which works in close partnership with the UK Government’s Department for International Trade.  SDI's aim is to support growth in and the internationalisation of the Scottish economy. We encourage investment in Scotland and support scottish companies to trade internationally.

SDI is looking to recruit a Senior International Trade Specialist (Technology & Science) based in Beijing to support SDI operations in Beijing and Greater China.

  • Support Scottish technology and science companies with market entry and growth strategies and develop a deep understanding of routes to market, business environment and regulatory framework; Work with colleagues in Scotland to deliver visit programmes, trade missions and learning journeys for Scottish companies, providing added value for participating companies by introducing them to your network of contacts and setting up 1-2-1 meetings for them while in market;
  • Lead on the development of effective in-market partnerships with key prospects and stakeholders at a senior level in technology and science sectors;
  • Identify new opportunities for Scottish technology and science companies and creat demand for Scottish products/services while responding to specific requests for trade support where appropriate;
  • Work with colleagues from across SDI, Scottish Enterprise, Highland and Island Enterprise and play a key role within account teams in Scotland to support Scottish technology and science companies to improve their export performance;
  • Delivery of key events and activities to support our trade work including webinars, roadshows, learning journeys, trade missions and speaking opportunities where relevant
  • Travel across China on a regular basis and occassional international travel.
  • Support the work of the wider Greater China and Asia Pacific teams as required.
  • Update CRM with details of all company support provided and how it has helped to deliver against SDI’s objectives.  Update account team members on the impact of any support provided.
  • Bachelor degree and above. Degree in business administration, business development or related discipline is preferrable.
  • At least 8-10 years of relevant working experience with a reasonable understanding of relevant sectors in China. (technology, engineering and life sciences).
  • Customer relationship management skills, with high levels of confidence and credibility in dealing with sector personnel
  • Diagnostic, strategic challenger, influencer and facilitation skills 
  • Ability to apply analytical skills in complex situations 
  • Knowledge of international trade (to Institute of Export level) and experience of supporting companies to export 
  • Knowledge and understanding of sectors and ability to engage credibly with senior industry representatives in the sector 
  • Market and sector knowledge in relation to international trade to enable the provision of advice to companies, colleagues and partners. An extensive network in relevant sectors (technology and engineering or life sciences) is preferreble .
  • Ability to work on own initiative  
  • Travel within market and at times across the geography and to Scotland.  Attendance at evening and other events  
  • Deliver presentations, respond to enquiries and produce briefings when required   
  • Provide accurate, up-to-date management information via internal systems   
  • Support performance improvement initiatives by adopting new approaches and contributing ideas  
  • Highly proficient in English and Mandarin
