The British Embassy in Beirut has a vacancy for the position of IT Officer, Grade – A2 (L).

Objective:

The IT Officer will be the right hand of the IT Manager at the British Embassy in Beirut, together delivering a top quality IT and communications service for all teams across the Embassy Platform. From dealing with day-to-day requests, to championing learning and development for staff across new IT software, you will be a key part of improving the efficiency of a fast-paced and rapidly expanded Embassy.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • You will be the first point of contact for FCO, DFID, MOD and DIT staff on day-to-day IT issues that cannot be dealt with via our IT Helpdesk in London. Following a new set of IT devices rolled out at our Embassy you will be key to keeping a smooth system for managing and prioritising requests. Due to the Helpdesk, Regional Support teams in Amman and the Head of IT’s technical experience you will not need specific IT expertise, rather excellent interpersonal, time management and communication skills in order to escalate and resolve IT issues effectively.
  • Reporting to the IT Manager, you will lead on administrative tasks including managing the IT inventory, maintaining hardware equipment, administering user accounts, back-up tapes and the Embassy’s Sharepoint. You will be responsible as the first point of contact locally for telephony support, liaising with Vodafone to ensure a quality phone service.
  • Registry officer duties include liaising with Regional Support Technical Teams before and during their visits to the Embassy on work required to ensure the smooth running of systems across all Embassy departments.
  • Engaging with users on their needs and preferences, you can take the lead on suggest learning and development opportunities related to IT and better ways of working with technology across the Embassy. With new technology currently being phased in across the Embassy you can play a key role in ensuring staff make the most of the opportunities offered by new programmes and devices.
  • Working with the Embassy’s communications team in particular, you will have oversight for the IT effects at Embassy events. You can make your mark organising excellent shows – from facilitating large film screenings to light shows, there is an extensive range of reception opportunities!
  • You can also be invaluable helping new arrivals settle in quickly, by getting their IT and telephony organised swiftly, as well as assisting incoming Ministerial and Senior official visits to ensure their IT and phone connectivity is working to the highest standard.
  • You will be responsible for keeping up-to-date an Information Asset Register, to record all the information we hold in the embassy, whether electronic or hard copy and for promoting best practice in information management across the Embassy.

Essential:

  • Excellent communication skills in English (both spoken and written)
  • At least two years of work experience in IT.
  • Extensive experience in managing service delivery, hardware, software and operations in an environment similar in size and security complexity to an Embassy.
  • Good knowledge of the full IT development lifecycle, IT governance, quality assurance, risk and change management principles and deployment.
  • Capacity to produce accurate reporting and communicate IT developments to non-expert staff members.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including motivation and working proactively within a small team and with regional and HQ colleagues.
  • Highly customers focussed.

Working Hours and Remuneration:

Conditioned working hours are 40 hours gross per week. The Embassy is committed to ensuring that you are able to maintain a suitable work-life balance. Leave entitlement is 20 days (pro rated) plus 14 public holidays.

The embassy offers a competitive remuneration package in line with local labour law (including transport, family, education allowances, and medical insurance coverage).

The successful candidate will be subject to a 90 day probationary period.

 

Eligibility:

The successful applicant will need to pass SC clearance for the role. Higher clearances can be granted only to certain nationalities.  For this reason, candidates must be of British, American, Australian, Canadian or New Zealand nationality and have a recent footprint in one of these countries in order to gain the level of clearance required.
