This is a dynamic entry-level role for an exceptional individual to join Department for International Trade’s (DIT) as the Trade and Investment Adviser.

Based in the British Consulate-General Hong Kong, this role will be a key player in providing two teams with administrative assistance in promoting trade and investment across Hong Kong, Macao, and the UK. The opportunity to work with both the Investment Team and the Financial & Professional Services sector team makes this an ideal role for talents who are keen to widen their exposures in various workstreams and are confident in thriving under matrix management structures. The ideal candidate should already possess exceptional organisational skills, high self-motivation, interests in international business activities, and are looking for career opportunities to develop sector knowledge and client-facing experiences.

Roles and responsibilities:

Internal administrative assistance

  • Primary duty is to provide general administrative assistance to senior members of both teams, including but not limited to data input, meeting and travel arrangements, event planning, CRM database management, procurement management, and performance tracking
  • Undertake market research and analysis to build intelligence on trends and developments within the Hong Kong finance sector and capital investment market
  • Collaborate with DIT’s internal marketing team in delivering public relations and communications plans, high level visits, priority events, trade missions in terms of logistics and programme arrangement
  • Cover other officers and undertake similar administrative work in other teams and sectors when needed
  • Represent the wider team and participate proactively in various communities and committees for feedback and suggestions

External service delivery

  • Develop a broad understanding of the Financial and Professional Services team and the Investment Team’s objectives and develop relevant connections in the UK, Hong Kong and Macau
  • Build and maintain positive working-level relationships with UK and HK investors, exporters, trade associations, local importers, distributers and other stakeholders
  • Respond to both internal and commercial enquiries from the UK, Hong Kong and Macao companies
  • Identify, draft and publish export opportunities on www.great.gov.uk
  • Assist the delivery of Overseas Market Introduction Service, Foreign Direct Investment projects and other business missions by conducting market research, business matching, coordinating visit programmes, organising events, and documenting data and progresses

Financial and Professional Services Sector

The Banking, Financial and Professional Services team sectors focuses on engagement with a full spectrum of firms based in Hong Kong; investment banks, retail banks, private equity firms, Fintechs, hedge funds, law firms, accounting firms, pension funds, asset managers, consulting firms, insurance firms and private wealth management offices.

The Banking, Financial and Professional Services team also engages a range of other government Consulates, committees, regulators and institutes across Hong Kong such as; The British Chamber of Commerce, Invest HK, HK Financial Services Dialogue Council, HK Trade & Development Council, HK FinTech Association, Institute of Chartered Accountants England & Wales, Financial Services Development Council.

The team engages these important stakeholders on high priority topics such as Green and Sustainable Finance, market access and increased collaboration between the UK and China  financial sectors.

Inward Investment to the UK

Hong Kong often acts as a conduit into and out of China for both goods and capital. With its strong links to the UK, Hong Kong has long been a major source of foreign direct investment into the UK.

Next to sizable investments by institutional investors into infrastructure, real estate and property development, the UK traditionally attracts FDI projects from some of Hong Kong’s other dominant sectors, including retail, logistics and trade, financial and professional services, and recently fin-tech.

This is a supporting role with occasional client-facing opportunities where outstanding organisational and communication skills are the key requirements for the role.

Essential on arrival:

  • Exceptional interpersonal and language skills with professional and diplomatic demeanour
  • Excellent administrative and organisational skills, with the ability to deliver high quality work with pace
  • Advanced Microsoft Office skills particularly in the use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • High self-motivation, flexible, resilient and proactive attitude
  • Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team or with senior stakeholders
  • Appropriate residence status or a valid working visa in Hong Kong
  • Broad knowledge of, or demonstrable interest in, the UK and Hong Kong’s finance and business sectors.
  • Experience of administrative support, marketing, event and budget management and/or business development
