The British Embassy in Madrid is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit a Communications Manager for the Diplomatic Academy.

The Diplomatic Academy is the home of learning and development in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. We support colleagues across the globe to improve and enhance their performance, skills and knowledge through focused L&D. We have customers in over 200 locations worldwide, and provide relevant learning experiences covering all areas of working internationally, from law to leadership, learning Arabic to learning economics and understanding the geography and political landscape across the network.

Our next step is to move from design to delivery. This means making our content more accessible and helping learners understand and engage with the huge array of learning content, and helping our colleagues become even better learners.

We are looking for an energetic and experienced Communications Manager to partner with colleagues and customers, lead the communications function and set a compelling comms vision. The Communications Manager will engage with a wide range of stakeholders to create an effective comms strategy and implement an impactful plan to support our continued growth and success.

Roles and responsibilities:

Partner with stakeholders, Faculites and colleagues to lead the communications effort within the Diplomatic Academy;

Provide Communications knowledge and expertise to the Diplomatic Academy (DA) team;

Create a refreshed Communication Strategy, ensuring buy-in from the senior team and across the Faculties;

Ensure a regular and relevant drum beat of activity to ensure customers and colleagues across the network engage with our offer to improve personal and business performance;

Create the Communication Plan, ensuring everyone involved is aware of their role;

Ensure the Strategy and Plan are measurable, and report on their implementation and impact;

Run the DA’s social media channels, internally and externally;

Own the DA’s intranet pages, ensuring they are up-to-date and accurate;

Own the DA’s public-facing events calenders and ensure they are complete and accurate;

Working with the DA’s Learning Design Team, ensure the DA has a consistent look and feel across all its products and services;

Ensure the DA team are upskilled for their roles in any communications effort;

Project Manage and specific communications campaigns and measure their success;

Line manage the Global Coordinator.


At least 5 years experience in Communication roles;

Excellent written communication skills, including copywriting, editing, and proofreading, with a commitment to communicating clearly and in plain English (C1 level).

Proven ability to work effectively in an environment of high activity, competing priorities, and time pressure.

Highly organised, detail oriented with an openness to new ideas and creative approaches to problem solving.

Strong stakeholder management skills with experience of co-creating audience-focused, fit-for-purpose content.

Ability to engage with senior levels.

This is a full-time permanent contract. The working hours are 37.5 hours per week.

The successful candidate is subject to a confirmation of a background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the Spanish Social Security Scheme and will therefore not be entitled to any gratuity from the Embassy based on gross annual salary.

The Embassy is a Diplomatic Mission with tax exempt status and does not collect taxes for other States. Employees are fully responsible for payment of income tax at the legally required rate. Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Spain are subject to terms and conditions of service according to local Spanish employment law.

Visa / Passport requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Spain and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
