View Vacancy - Pro Consul, Guatemala City
Main purpose of job:
The main purpose of the role is to ensure delivery of professional and high quality front line services in line with FCDO guidance.
The successful candidate will need to deliver professional and efficient consular services to British Nationals and other qualifying persons in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras: including working on consular cases, such as hospitalisations, deaths, detentions, victims of crime, cases of mental health and Emergency Travel Documents.
The Pro-Consul, will act as the first point of contact for consular customers, often working independently, reporting to the Vice Consul. They will also be required to work with senior management and Press and Communications teams at post and in the region, particularly during the Vice Consul’s absence.
Roles and responsibilities:
Assistance work, including crisis:
- Provide consular advice and assistance to British Nationals and other qualifying persons, with a particular emphasis on those deemed vulnerable.
- Print Emergency Travel Documents according to guidance.
- Assist with high profile and/or complex consular cases, maintaining communication with stakeholders externally (local authorities, NGOs, Civil Society and other Embassies) and internally including senior management and London.
- Assist in meeting Consular Business Targets.
- Build and maintain a good base of consular contacts through outreach programmes to assist with Consular cases and Crisis planning.
- Participate in Crisis Exercises and prepare for possible deployment as deputy Consular Manager.
- Help to establish and maintain a network of key contacts, such as government agencies, NGOs, other Embassies, etc.
- Occasional travel for outreach in Antigua, Solola and El Salvador and Honduras.
Communication and administration:
- Assist with Consular internal and external communications at post.
- In the Vice Consul’s absence represent the Embassy at Consular meetings.
- Work with the authorities on consular issues.
- Undertake administrative and other self-management tasks.
- Contribute to the management of the Consular Budget for Post.
- Contribute to Consular Strategy and Policy input and respond to requests for information from Regional Management and London.
- Participate in regional video conferences.
- Support other posts in the region by contributing to resilience, both remotely and deploying when required.
Managing small budgets (consular imprest, benevolent fund, consular fees) from time to time.
Essential on arrival:
- Excellent organisation, prioritisation and communication skills;
- Should be a proactive and creative self-starter with strong interpersonal skills who has the ability to learn quickly;
- Able to prioritise in a fast-paced work environment, working largely unsupervised, delivering to deadlines and agreed targets;
- Have excellent communication skills relating to relationship building both internally and externally to the British Embassy;
- Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish;
- Computer literate, working with Microsoft Windows and able to manage information effectively with available computer systems;
- Language: fluent in English and Spanish.
Desirable on arrival:
- Higher Education in international relations, law, social sciences, psychology or other relevant field;
- Customer/Casework experience, especially dealing with vulnerable people;
- Experience working in the government sector or with NGOs;
- Good understanding of the Guatemalan, Salvadoran and Honduran government institutions and legal system.

The nature of the job may include tasks that some may find distressing, such as prison, hospital and morgue visits. The successful applicant will need to have a high level of resilience.
