The British Embassy in Helsinki is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking for a Trade Adviser.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) works with UK-based businesses to ensure UK-based companies’ success in international markets and encourage the best overseas companies to look to the UK as their global partner of choice.

As member of DIT’s Trade team in Finland the trade adviser’s role is to assist UK-based companies looking to export goods and services to Finland. This is a client-facing role, with focus on assisting UK exporters to enter the market in Finland by identifying suitable contacts and helping with market access-related questions. DIT Finland’s focus sectors include food & drink, retail, infrastructure, construction and energy.

The trade adviser is expected to engage in other activities across sections in the embassy as required.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Proactively identify value opportunities in Finland for UK-based businesses; communicating the opportunities through DIT’s services and by direct contacts with UK-based trade associations and other industry bodies, and following up with interested companies directly. 
  • Independently plan and carry out activities, which lead to UK-based businesses increasing exports and winning contracts in Finland, through e.g. trade events, tailored market research, competitor analysis and addressing market access questions in Finland.
  • Build contacts within the Finnish business community to enable introduction of UK-based companies into the market and in order to identify supply chain opportunities. 
  • Support for wider embassy work as required.
  • Positive and flexible attitude.
  • Pro-active customer-focused approach.
  • Interest in learning about different sectors and industries.
  • Ability to prioritise and work to deadlines.
  • Confidence to build and engage a useful network of contacts. 
  • Prior knowledge or experience of the international business environment and trade promotion.

This is a full-time temporary contract of 36.25 hours per week for a maternity cover.

The appointment is subject to professional background check, security clearance and the successful completion of a probationary period.
