Main purpose of job:

Media officer for development and prosperity, managing communications, media relations for DFID, Trade and Energy.

Roles and responsibilities 

Lead DFID India communications work.  

Develop and maintain the DFID India communications strategy, narrative and press lines, working closely with colleagues across the office and in the UK. Provide advice to colleagues and partners on handling media enquiries, appropriate communications within programmes, including events, websites, and language used in official documents, Developing communication products to proactively showcase DFID’s work across the BHC and build linkages with other departments. Support wider corporate communications work and presentational aspects of DFID India’s work. Coach colleagues on appropriate writing styles.  

Lead on developing communications strategy and delivery of key HMG delivery areas on Energy, Urban and Skills.

Work across BHC network in India to design all inclusive communications strategies with the aim to effectively communicate the UK’s offer to India on Energy, Urban and Skills. Ensure the bilateral messages in the areas are developed and communicated to the target audience.

Manage media stories, public debates and high-level visits.

Manage handling of positive and negative press stories as they arise, producing timely press lines and briefing for internal and external audiences.  Monitoring of specialist media on DFID, Prosperity areas.  Identify and lead media engagement opportunities for DFID, Trade and Prosperity visitors in the network (senior officials and ministers). Develop messaging and relevant core-script as required for each visit.  Build and maintain a diverse network of media contacts, spotting opportunities to promote UK offer and defending HMG against difficult stories.

Deliver specific communications campaigns in Prosperity team.

Working with campaigns colleagues across the Prosperity and DIT teams in India and in London, conceive proactive communications activity in line best HMG practice guidelines. Promote involvements in, and success of Prosperity.  

  • Strong written and verbal communications skills.
  • Contacts with journalists covering development, energy and trade.
  • Knowledge of social media tools like Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn.

 

Degree in media or journalism.
