The British Embassy in Berlin is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas. The Embassy is now looking for an Estates Maintenance Officer. We are looking to recruit a qualified certified electrician with experience of supervising staff who is also able to carry out other maintenance and repairs such as minor plumbing, carpentry and metalwork. The job holder will line manage and oversee the work of three removal & maintenance staff, ensuring that all tasks are carried out effectively and to a high standard. The Estates Maintenance Officer reports to the Estates Manager.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Support the Estates Manager with delivering an efficient and smooth running of the estates operation, with particular focus on the day-to-day management of all maintenance issues.

  • Carry out installations, maintenance and repairs of electrical systems and items across the Embassy’s residential Estate in the Berlin area as required.

  • Carry out other maintenance and repair jobs, including minor plumbing, exchanging locks, connecting white goods and changing security light bulbs.

  • Line manage a team of currently three removal & maintenance staff.

  • Work closely with other colleagues in the Estates team to ensure customer expectations are met to a high standard.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.


  • Fully qualified electrician, certified to work on voltages of up to 1000V.

  • The ability to speak and write English (to at least level C1 CEFR)* and to speak German (to at least level B1 CEFR)*.

  • Experience of supervising staff and ability to motivate others.

  • Ability to carry out other maintenance and repair jobs such as minor plumbing, wood- and metalwork repairs, changing of locks

  • The ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision and as part of a team.

  • Excellent customer services skills and time management skills.

  • Good communication skills.

  • Clean driver’s licence.

  • Good IT skills.

  • An understanding and commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

This is a full-time fixed-term position for a contract period of two years, with the possibility of renewal by mutual agreement. Provisional start date is 1st April but a later starting date may be possible.

The gross yearly salary is €45,564.00 rising to approx €51,182.00 gross per annum after a qualifying period in addition to performance related pay (salary is not negotiable).

The successful candidate will be subject to professional background check and security clearance. The successful candidate must have pre-existing work authorisation in Germany in order to apply.

Staff recruited locally by the British Embassy in Germany are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local German employment law.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Germany and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
