This position, based in the British Consulate General in Miami, is to provide high level administrative support to the Criminal Justice Advisor (CJA). The CJA works within the British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean (COTS)* to build capacity and to advise on law reform. The CJA is based in Miami but frequently travels to the COTs. The CJA Assistant will undertake of a range of tasks for the CJA, to support engagement with stakeholders in the criminal justice system in the COTs and to support the successful and timely implementation of policies and guidance which progress the aims of the project. The role will involve legal research and therefore legal or law enforcement experience or knowledge is essential.
*Anguilla, Bermuda, the British Virgin Islands, The Cayman Islands, Montserrat and The Turks and Caicos Islands.

**This is a long-term contract position lasting until 31 July 2018, eligible for possible renewal.**

The role is open to anyone with the independent right to reside and work in the USA. The role will involve close collaboration with UK Government & COT stakeholders, so excellent interpersonal skills are essential. A strong stakeholder focus is required. The applicant must be articulate and demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without supervision. Organisational skills are essential, as well as accuracy and an attention to detail.
The role will be subject to the necessary security clearance.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Researching legal and non-legal topics including legislation, legal codes and reported court cases and presenting the findings logically and coherently.
  • Externally build a network of resources and contacts by communicate effectively with a wide and diverse range of stakeholders, while displaying efficiency and sensitivity.
  • Assisting in the drafting of business documents
  • Managing the office in the absence of the CJA handling enquiries or referring onwards as appropriate.
  • Maintain and manage the CJA’s schedule by coordinating diary appointments and meetings as well as preparing and distributing agendas, briefing papers and minutes.
  • Setup and arrange conferences while making travel arrangements and other accommodations for the CJA and other conference delegates.
  • Responsible for the budgeting and forecasting of travel, discretionary and other project expenditures.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in all areas of work.

• A minimum of 3-5 years of related work experience
• Legal or law enforcement experience or knowledge required
• Excellent interpersonal & communication skills
• Organisational skills with ability to demonstrate initiative and self-motivation
• Ability to handle multiple tasks and projects at pace
• IT skills including MS Office
