The British Embassy in Tashkent is part of the world- wide UK diplomatic network working to promote British interests and we are now looking to recruit a Regional Climate Change Policy Officer.

 

In this role, you will liaise with the Climate Diplomacy team in London and the UK’s Embassies across Central Asia, working closely with relevant policy, prosperity, and commercial colleagues, to deliver activity in support of the UK government’s COP26 objectives. The main purpose is to ensure effective coordination of the UK government’s climate change work Central Asia, providing support for projects and other activities that help to raise climate ambition in the region.

The 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) in Glasgow in November 2021 will be the UK’s largest ever summit and is the UK’s major foreign policy priority for the year. It represents a defining international moment for addressing climate change, six years on from the Paris Agreement. Crucial work will follow to cement the pledges made in Glasgow.

 

Roles and Responsibilities

Communications. You will work with the communications teams across the five Posts, helping communications colleagues to create engaging content, ensuring that information is shared effectively and helping to increase awareness of climate change issues across the region. You will provide the Climate Diplomacy team in London with regular updates on activities and success stories. (35%)

Events. You will provide support for outreach events linked to COP26 at the five Posts, including working with colleagues to provide high quality briefing for senior visitors. You will support the operational elements of the Central Asian countries participation in COP26. (35%)

Projects. You will support delivery of climate change projects e.g. as part of the International Programme , ensuring that it is in line with relevant timetables and budgets. (10%)

Coordination. This will include input into a regional strategy, identifying opportunities for regional collaboration and involving our Regional COP26 Ambassador as appropriate. (15%)

Corporate. You will hold a corporate responsibility objective, which contributes to the wider corporate agenda as well as ad hoc cover for colleagues. (5%)

This is a temporary contract in order to deliver on the unique opportunity presented by the COP26 conference programme in Tashkent. It should involve travel to the other Posts, when this is possible. The specific responsibilities are likely to evolve as the campaign progresses.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills enabling effective communication in English and Russian (minimum C1 level);
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in a relevant field, for instance, Project Management, Public Administration, International Relations, Climate and Environment.
  • Good understanding of foreign policy issues, in particular UK foreign policy and relevant institutions.
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience working for an organisation in a relevant field, for example, working for/with national or regional government, international organisations or agencies, preferably in climate change.
  • Proven project management track-record, including running budgets.
  • Experience of collaborating with diverse and senior level relationships.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; confidence in dealing with senior contacts and colleagues;
  • Strong IT skills.
  • Knowledge of financial / budget management principles or previous financial management experience.
  • Foreign policy background, either academic or via work experience;
  • Master’s Degree.

This is a fixed term full-time contract, for 12 months (40 hours per week).
