Main purpose of the job:

To contribute to providing a high quality F&B service at the official residence of the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka in Colombo working closely with the Residence Manager, and members of the High Commission team.

To play a full part in the work of the permanent household team of 4 or 5 in: maintaining the Residence clean and generally fit for purpose; delivering all official entertainment; all meal and other catering planning, preparation and service; preparing for and looking after guests; stock controls and some basic administration tasks. To support the delivery of events at the Residence, and on occasion elsewhere, working with other teams across the High Commission.

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Prepare table, serve and clear meals.
  • Simple cooking without assistance.
  • Washing, cleaning all tableware, etc.
  • Play full part in keeping clean and fit for purpose the interior of the house and the immediate areas outside it. 
  • Keep silver and other items (door handles, lamp stands, etc) polished and clean.
  • Prepare for and support the delivery of events at the Residence, in and outside the house.

  • Prepare for, receive, look after, serve and see off guests. 

  • Assist Residence Manager to maintain an accurate cellar stock inventory and effective system of stock management.

  • Make sure the cellar is always clean and tidy and at the right temperature.

  • Assist Residence Manager and chef to control and maintain appropriate levels of pantry supplies. 

  • Support Residence Manager to ensure that the Residence is operating effectively and efficiently in all respects.  

  • Support Residence Manager to ensure that all members of the Residence team are working effectively and happily, are supported and well-managed.   

  • Any other duties as instructed by the line manager.

Language requirements: 

Language: English 

Level of language required: Spoken – Fluent, Written – Good

Sinhala & Tamil preferred.

Other skills / experience / qualifications: 

Essential on arrival:

  • 2-3 years of experience in 5 Star Hotel/Hospitality Sector.
  • Can do attitude.
  • Willing to work long hours as and when requested.

Desirable:      

  • Basic knowledge on Spirits & all beverages
  • Basic knowledge of cooking and housekeeping.
  • Basic Knowledge of using Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook (email).

For British High Commission (BHC) candidates, the Local Staff BHC Terms & Conditions will apply. 

For other than BHC candidates, starting salary will be LKR 61,260 + 12% EPF + 3% ETF per month. Other benefits include 13 month’s salary and medical insurance coverage.

Working pattern:

  • Working hours will be 48 per week with 1 hour lunch break.
