Commercial Diplomacy

Main purpose of job:

Support the delivery of the BHC Nairobi Prosperity Strategy.  The UK wants to see growth in Kenya whilst broadening the opportunities for British economic interests.

Roles and responsibilities 

Ensure the effective operation of the cross-Mission Prosperity Board. The Board works to a strategy agreed by FCO, DFID and DIT.  Responsible for arranging meetings, agreeing the agenda, preparing records of meetings and ensuring follow-up on agreed actions.    

Working closely with the Head of the Prosperity team, work with a network of Kenyan business, regulatory and Government contacts to deliver high-level visits and events, including the twice yearly UK/ Kenya Economic Development Forum.

Support the “Graft busters” group, comprising colleagues from several departments working to tackle corruption in Kenya. Corruption is a high-profile Presidential priority, a major concern for the international community and an obstacle to growth and development.  Arrange meetings, agree agendas, prepare and circulate minutes and track actions.  

Provide guidance and advice on key business environment issues; evaluate how to tackle constraints and to build on successes.

Support the fast growing work on Climate Change and Natural Resource Management.  Work with colleagues from several Government departments to develop a strategy that meets Kenyan needs and delivers UK objectives.     

All High Commission staff are encouraged to participate in the wider, corporate life of the Mission as well as play a role in crisis management activities on an ad hoc basis.

You will work as part of a wider team that has members from multiple different UK government departments. This means that a good candidate will be open to challenging ideas and different perspectives on what they are trying to achieve but able to see how it all fits in.

You must also be able to think through a problem and identify solutions. This will include identifying the key stakeholders for each issue and thinking creatively about how best to persuade them to either the UK view or the Kenyan perspective.

Working Patterns:

7:15 AM -4:00 PM – Monday to Thursday

7:45 AM -13:00PM – Friday

Flexible working could be arranged, including opportunities to work from home and possibility to work adjusted hours. The jobholder will not routinely have to work out of hours.  When assisting with visits there may be a need to work outside of normal working hours; the jobholder will be eligible for time off in lieu if required to work extra hours. 

Leave:

Members of staff are entitled to paid annual leave, which is earned, from the day they commence employment. Entitlements are as follows:

Grades B3 (L) 30 days

In addition to annual leave, the BHC normally observes no fewer than 9 and no more than 14 Kenyan and British public and religious holidays in a year. These vary from year to year and are at the discretion of the High Commissioner. A list of holidays is published each year.

The High Commission is committed to Learning & Development.  We encourage both formal training, drawing on what is on offer from the FCO, Civil Service Learning as well as informal on-the-job development.  We are also happy to support activity designed to develop your broader understanding of the FCO and to enhance your skills base. Everyone joining the High Commission is provided with a package of learning opportunities to enhance their knowledge of Kenya and the UK and to gain qualifications from the UK’s Diplomatic Academy.  The holder of this job will be expected to follow the Academy’s Prosperity curriculum.
