Community Liaison

The British Embassy in Ankara is part of a world-wide network representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is now looking to recruit a Community Liaison Officer (CLO) on permanent and part-time basis (15 hours/week).

Main purpose of the job is to be an advocate for and provide support to UK based staff and families (FCO and PAGs) on family and community issues, primarily in the areas of information gathering, welfare and communication. Flexibility, trustworthiness, initiative and strong interpersonal skills are all qualities that will be needed by the jobholder. The successful applicant must be available to take up the position as of 1 August 2018.

Main responsibilities will include:

Welcome and Arrival

  • Answer any queries from staff and their spouses/partners who are considering bidding for the post;
  • Contact families and single staff prior to arrival and send relevant information;
  • Keep welcome pack updated;
  • Take all newcomers on tour of city (shops, medical, educational and recreational facilities etc);
  • Ensure newcomers are introduced to the community;
  • Provide a confidential listening ear/advise on appropriate referral/provide on-going support and follow-up;
  • Give support in cases of sickness and bereavement;
  • Liaise with Management on any relevant medical matters;
  • Keep abreast of personnel policy developments and disseminate information.

Liaison with Diplomatic Service Families Association (DSFA)

  • Arrange DSFA meetings/lunches every 2 months;
  • Maintain guide on spouse/partner employment opportunities copied to DSFA;
  • Submit DSFA Annual Return by September each year;
  • Send prospectuses of schools uses by Post, annually to DSFA;
  • Submit annual school information sheets to DSFA on schools and kinder gardens attended by British children.

Communication

  • Maintain up-to-date information on post notice board and circulate general information about local staff job vacancies;
  • Liaise with other missions’ CLO (regular meetings);
  • Liaise and network with local groups/organisations;
  • Produce CLO newsletters twice a month;
  • Work with the CLO in Istanbul to prepare the Turkish Eye Magazine three times a year.

Additional Tasks

  • Keep an updated list of children at Post;
  • Be aware of post contingency and evacuation plans;
  • Welfare officer of the Crisis Management Team of the Embassy;
  • Help organise Embassy Carol Concert once a year;
  • Organise Children’s Christmas Party;
  • Planning recreational events;
  • Sending regular updates to London, including regular Cost of Living Allowance Surveys.
  • Fluency in English (both oral and written);
  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications;
  • Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong resource management and information gathering skills;
  • Good reporting skills;
  • Open and flexible approach to changing conditions;
  • Ability to behave calmly in emergency situations.
  • Fluency in Turkish (both oral and written).

This vacancy is open exclusively for internal FCO Local Staff and spouses / partners of Diplomats.

This is a permanent full-time fixed-term contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. The duration of the contract will be for a period of 12 months (with the possibility of extension by mutual agreement).

The monthly salary for this position is 1,702.72 TL abated (will be paid pro rata) A2 level. Please note that staff members are responsible for paying any income tax required by local law.
