Main purpose of job:

The British Embassy Tokyo is seeking to recruit a Market Access Policy Officer to work in our busy and dynamic Trade Policy Team. The team works with a wide range of stakeholders in UK and Japanese government and business to deliver the future bilateral economic partnership between the UK and Japan. Improving market access for UK companies in Japan is a key priority for government and business as the UK looks towards its future beyond the EU. 

The role of the Market Access Policy Officer is to coordinate market access work across the Japan Network (British Embassy Tokyo and British Consulate-General Osaka). The job holder will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to gather intelligence on market access issues and organise lobbying strategies and activities. The job holder will lead also sector specific market access work in priority sectors as these arises.

Working within the Trade Policy Team presents an opportunity to learn the dynamics of bilateral trade discussions as we seek a new trade and investment relationship with Japan. Working with teams across the Japan Network and UK ministries will give the job holder experience across a wide range of sectors and issues affecting UK companies in Japan.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

  • Management of Japan and UK Market Access Databases, working closely with internal and external stakeholders to identify and gather information on market access barriers affecting UK businesses. Contrinbute to market access information sharing and prioritisation across the Japan Network and with key UK domestic Departments, in particular the Department for International Trade.
  • Assist lobbying in priority sectors to benefit UK companies, working closely with the Market Access Advisor to implement lobbying strategies to address market access barriers affecting UK companies in Japan
    Engagement with Japanese and UK government departments, industry organisations and businesses, to support intergovernmental processes in priority sectors, to coordinate and help progress bilateral market access discussions.
  • Help plan and deliver UK ministerial and senior government official visits, working closely with the Embassy Visits Officer to provide support to direct UK engagement with Japan.
  • Provide administrative support to the team and wider Embassy activities

  • Experience of working in an English and Japanese speaking environment.
  • Good level of English (IELTS band 7 or TOEIC 800 points or above or equivalent)
  • Fluent Japanese language skills (JLPT level 1 or equivalent)
  • An active interest in government policy issues, ideally in the economic/trade policy sphere.
