The British High Commission in Nicosia is part of a world-wide network, representing British political, economic and consular interests overseas and is looking to recruit for the position of Assistant to the HMRC Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer.

The main purpose of the job is to provide essential administrative and logistical support to the HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer (FCLO) based in the British High Commission, Cyprus.

The job holder will support the FCLO in their engagement with internal and external partners in Cyprus, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria in support of HMRC’s objectives in reducing threats to UK tax regimes and pursuing criminal finances, assets and the proceeds of crime.

The role will support the FCLO in developing, maintaining and strengthening relationships with external partners and provide project support and research for briefings and reports under the direction the FCLO.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Support the FCLO during meetings and liaison with internal and external partners. Where necessary, provide language support to the FCLO as directed, including for exchanges of information and at official meetings and events; this may require occasional attendance at events outside of normal working hours.  

  • Conduct office administration duties under the instructions of the Fiscal Crime Liaison Officer and in accordance with policy and standard operating procedures. Duties include: records management; planning travel and visits; organising events and maintaining office accounts and databases.  
  • Compile verbal and written briefings as directed, including regular monthly management reporting.
  • Provide open source research support (in host languages where necessary).

  • Maintain oversight of regional projects projects including; monitoring and evaluation of their impact; monitoring budgets to ensure value for money; and producing narrative reports to deadlines. 

  • Monitor FCLO office mailbox and telephone so that messages are responded to in a timely fashion and / or directed as required. 

  • Support broader corporate work across the High Commission as directed by the FCLO, especially during any crisis response.

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.

  • A flexible approach to work; this may occasionally include short notice working outside of core hours and during weekends and public holidays.  Very occasionally, there may also be a requirement to attend conferences and meetings overseas.

  • Good IT skills and experience in Microsoft Office tools (including Office, Teams, Word, Excel, Powerpoint).

  • Ability to process and understand large amounts of data and information; turning this into concise and accurate reports.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and confidence in dealing with senior level people.

  • Constructive, positive and service orientated attitude.

  • Excellent organisational skills for document and record management.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and to prioritise workloads where required.

  • Ability to respect the confidentiality of work issues and understands the personal and professional consequences of lapses in security.

  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, including evidence of engaging stakeholders, customers and partners at all levels.

  • Proficient knowledge of one of Greek and / or Turkish and / or Arabic language.

  • Full driving licence desirable.

  • Experience of working in an area with a high level of personal responsibility and has a track record of being accountable for own actions / decisions.

  • Knowledge of the various government institutions in Cyprus.

This is a full-time Permanent contract and the gross monthly salary for this position is € 2328 at B3 (L) grade level.

The confirmation of appointment is subject to professional background checks and security clearance procedures, as well as the successful completion of a 6-month probation period. Security Vetting will be required at SC (Overseas).

The successful candidate must be free of any convictions, and undergo a UK security clearance process.
