The UK Mission to the European Union (UKMis) ensures the UK’s interests are promoted and explained to EU member states and the EU institutions. UKMis is part of a world-wide network of 270 Diplomatic Posts, representing British political economic and consular interests overseas, and is now looking for a full-time, HEO, Migration and Visas Attaché (Brussels, UK Mission to the EU).

Main purpose of job:

The holder of this position will play a key role in contributing to the UK’s migration and mobility objectives, with a key focus on developments in the area of illegal migration. The team covers a number of other high-priority areas, including borders, asylum, organised immigration crime and citizens’ rights.

Roles and responsibilities:

The role holder will be expected to monitor and analyse developments in the EU space on migration policy, with a focus on illegal migration and visa policy. They will be responsible for producing briefing and advice and will need to engage with both internal and external stakeholders, while remaining astute and spotting opportunities for working with EU and international partners on migration and mobility.

The role holder will need to quickly build expertise and develop strong relationships with UK Government colleagues, as well as external partners. It is expected that they will also lead for the team on upstream (external) migration objectives and on tackling modern slavery and trafficking in human beings. There will also be opportunities to engage in and lead on public diplomacy activities.

This role will provide the opportunity to work on fast-moving and high-profile issues, with a great deal of political interest, and gain exposure to senior level UK Government colleagues at the UK Mission and in London. The ideal candidate would be someone who is a good communicator, able to deliver at pace and is able to deliver effectively by prioritising workload and juggling competing demands during busy periods. They will need to be flexible about the exact nature of the work, and so will need to be able to adapt to changing priorities and developments.

  • A self-starter, demonstrating a flexible, pro-active attitude;
  • A strong team player with good people skills; strong ability to network and interact;
  • Ability to prioritise, effectively manage and execute multiple and competing tasks within the agreed deadlines;
  • Strong written and oral communication, including good written drafting skills in English - Minimum C1 Level for CEFR framework;
  • Full proficiency in MS Office applications.
  • Experience of working on EU migration policy;
  • Previous experience of working with UK Government departments;
  • Experience of working with think tanks and/or non-government organisations;
  • French language skills (intermediate level (B1 for CEFR framework) in French language skills).

This is a permanent full-time contract for 5 working days (36.25 hours net) per week. The monthly gross salary for this position is €6,285.34 (gross), HEO level. In addition, we offer an extensive salary package, which includes a 13th month, luncheon vouchers, pension scheme, optional hospitalisation insurance (subject to monthly employee contribution), reimbursement of public transport and a lot more. We offer more days of annual leave than the Belgian requirements.

The UKMis Learning & Development (L&D) Committee coordinates an extensive programme of L&D activity. UKMis has a strong L&D culture and is committed to creating opportunities within the job to stretch or develop particular skills. Our current L&D priorities include building Skills for Being an Outstanding Third Country Mission, Knowledge of the EU and UK-EU Relations and Career Development. The L&D Committee has a small annual budget to which all UKMis colleagues can bid for funding to support L&D activity.

Please note that Belgian nationals will be paid their salary gross and are expected to comply with their tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the Belgian authorities. Non-Belgian nationals will receive their salary net, minus the deduction of an equivalent level of Belgian tax retained at source. Further information on this will be given to candidates during the recruitment process.

Staff recruited locally by the British Diplomatic Missions in Belgium are subject to Terms and Conditions of Service according to local Belgian employment law.

The successful candidates will be subject to professional background checks and security clearance.

Passport: officers are expected to be in possession of a passport due to the possibility that they may be asked to undertake business travel.

Visa/work permit requirements: Candidates must currently hold the independent right to live and work in Belgium and be prepared to ensure that right remains throughout the scope of the contract.
