Main purpose of job:

This varied, stretching role will support the British Embassy’s engagement with the Angolan government and international community. The successful candidate will provide executive support (including diary management) to HMA and DHM, as well as lead on protocol issues across the Embassy. Roles and responsibilities:

  • This is a fascinating job, a strong and developmental political role in a challenging and rapidly changing delivery environment. It will be suited to someone with good administrative  and computer skills, including Microsoft Office package (Outlook, Excel, Word), resilience and an energetic approach able to spot and solve problems immediately. 
  • You will have regular contact with the Angolan Government, including at senior levels, so you will need to quickly understand Protocol issues and use this knowledge to ensure Embassy business runs smoothly. You will support staff across the mission (Corporate, Political, Commercial sections) on Protocol issues including visas and accreditation.  This will include arrangements for arriving diplomats and their families. You will also have opportunity to support incoming visits from the UK, including at senior official and Ministerial level. 
  • You will work as Executive Assistant for Her Majesty’s Ambassador and the Deputy Head of Mission managing their diaries so that they always accurately reflect commitments such as meetings or events.  You will need to have a proactive, outward-facing approach in order to develop and maintain a strong network with your counterparts in other Embassies, International Organisations and Ministries.
  • You will deal with colleagues, members of the public and officials courteously and professionally at all times whether via email, telephone or in person.  You will deliver routine tasks, including answering external phone calls, welcoming and guiding guests at reception, managing the Embassy’s mailbox, and distributing mail. You will also manage the guest list for major Embassy and Ambassadorial events e.g. the Queen’s Birthday Party .
  • You will coordinate the Embassy’s Note Verbale and official correspondence system, by ensuring standards are met regularly: electronically logging ingoing and outgoing correspondence, drafting official communications in both English and Portuguese.
  • 2 years professional experience in an international environment
  • Evidence of proficiency in IT skills such as Microsoft Office package (Excel, Outlook, Word)
  • Fluent written and spoken Portuguese and English 
  • Previous experience as a PA/Secretary or similar
