Main purpose of the job:

The role of the Foreign Policy Analyst will be to deliver in depth analysis and reporting on India’s foreign policy and its impact on UK interests in India and the wider region.  There will be a particular focus on reporting developments as regards India’s relationships in the Indian Ocean Region, South East Asia (including ASEAN) and BRICS.  This role reports to a Senior Foreign Policy Adviser.  It would be ideally suited to someone looking to develop their professional skills in international relations or policy-making and the successful candidate would be supported in developing the necessary skills in the role.

Roles and responsibilities:

The role of Foreign Policy Analyst sits within the Foreign and Security Policy team which forms part of the British High Commission’s (BHC) Political section. The main roles and responsibilities can be categorised as political reporting, project management and other corporate support. 

1.     Political Reporting

Regular written reporting and updates on key foreign policy developments, as well as reporting on longer term trends within Indian foreign policy and their impact on UK interests.  These reports will be read by and inform colleagues across the High Commission and in London including senior readers. The job holder will have lead responsibility for reporting on the following areas:

-          India’s relations with Africa and Latin America

-          India’s Look East (and Act East) policy

-          ASEAN and SAARC organisations

-          Australia

-          Burma

The job holder will have the opportunity to develop and maintain a wide network of contacts with interests and expertise in these areas in order to gain insights.

2.     Project Management

Manage and implement specific foreign policy projects, including our flagship annual Young Thinkers Conference (YTC), small group Emerging Voices Discussions and other projects as are successful in bidding rounds.  The job holder will have the freedom to develop new project proposals that achieve team objectives and bid for their ideas.

3.     Corporate support

The job holder will have opportunities to work on other policy areas of interest by supporting the wider work of the Foreign and Security Policy team and the Political Department. Examples include assisting with programme ideas for Senior Official and Ministerial visits and helping to implement them. As a member of the British High Commission, the job holder will identify and lead on a corporate contribution within the BHC.

Resources managed (staff and expenditure):

The job holder will be responsible for the delivery of specific foreign policy projects and their associated budgets.

Learning and development opportunities:

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office provides a strong learning and development package through the International Academy and its faculties. Some of the faculties include geographic and thematic areas such as South Asia, Security, Defence and Intelligence, Understanding the UK and Diplomatic Practice. These take the form of courses, workshops and seminars by internal and external speakers.

This is an especially exciting time to join the British High Commission’s Foreign and Security Policy team. The world’s geopolitical centre is increasingly shifting to Asia and the Indian Ocean meaning that the reporting and project work of this job holder and the wider team will become increasingly important and gain senior interest both locally and in London.

Other skills / experience / qualifications: 

Essential on arrival: Excellent written and oral communication skills. An ability to produce written work that is concise and timely and can deliver briefings and presentations in a confident and professional manner. The successful candidate has a strong interest in international relations and foreign policy.

A background that includes study of international relations, political science or other related field. Project management skills.

The starting salary will be INR 62,826 plus a 12% provident fund and 6% Special allowance per month.
