Main purpose of job:

To support the Global Challenges Team in the UK’s engagement with Japan on a range of high profile topics,  including COVID-19, global health, ageing society, environment/wildlife and labour issues.

The jobholder will need to be flexible in adapting to changing priorities. This role offers the opportunity to work in a friendly and welcoming environment on priority issues in both domestic and international contexts. A positive mindset, enthusiasm and willingness to do and learn new things are essential.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?:

The jobholders’ duties are expected to include the following:

  • Researching and reporting on Japanese policies in the areas we cover.
  • Identifying relevant stakeholders and developing contacts, particularly in Japanese government
  • Administrative support for the team, including arranging meetings, booking travel, managing online files, maintaining databases and team budget
  • Supporting logistics and planning for visits and events, including Ministerial visits from the UK.
  • Preparing public communications in conjunction with our Media team
  • Contributing to the Embassy’s corporate objectives; you will be able to choose a role that suits you, as well as an allocated role for times of crisis.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable with all standard Office software

Language requirements:

Language:   Native or near-native Japanese with strong English

Level of language required:   Japanese native or JLPT1. English equivalent to TOEIC 900;

Learning and development opportunities:

The British Embassy offers comprehensive learning and development opportunities that will be fully available to the jobholder. We regularly run both work area specific training, as well as more general skills development in project management, finance, and leadership. Each year the job holder will be encouraged to use five development days to pursue job related and personal development goals.

All staff are required to take a role in the embassy’s crisis preparation and response. Full training will be provided for this and regular opportunities will be available to test and develop your skills.

Working patterns:

Yes: the Embassy is very supportive of a range of flexible working approaches. However, any successful candidate would need to be willing to flex to work for longer hours and potentially at weekends in the run up to a visit. The Embassy operates a TOIL system to compensate for additional hours worked during busy periods.

Occasional out of hours working is required to support Embassy events.
