Main purpose of job:

The British Government’s Embassy in Washington DC, USA has an exciting opportunity for a proactive and dynamic person to join the Ministry of Defence as Product Manager of the American British Canadian Australian and New Zealand (ABCANZ) Armies’ Interoperability Program. This opportunity is a rewarding role which supports and further develops the special relationship between the UK and the Five Eyes Armies, working at the forefront of international diplomacy in order to make a real difference globally.

This is a chance to directly contribute to the way in which the UK and other Five Eyes Armies collaborate and negotiate on Army interoperability. You will be working as part of a multi-national team of 10 people – two Ministry of Defence civil servants and eight uniformed officers from across the Five Eyes nations. The Mission of the ABCANZ Armies Program is to promote and manage interoperability between the Armies. This is achieved through the mitigation of interoperability gaps usually through writing and publishing of standards. The role of Product Manager is editing, spell check, grammar check and publishing of products; manage the electronic library of products; minute taking at annual conferences and administrative support to the Program Office. The Product Manager does not have any direct reports.

The position is based in Crystal City, Arlington close to the Pentagon and requires international travel to the Five Eyes countries during the year. The position supports the five program managers in the Program Office providing them with advice on templates and formats of products, additionally the Product Manager will regularly (daily) email or speak with ABCANZ representatives in each of the Five Eyes nations.

The ideal candidate will be skilled with the Microsoft 365 suite of software, comfortable working with a small professional team of uniformed officers, an effective communicator and a will have strong attention to detail. 

Roles and responsibilities:

•    Edit, spell check, grammar check & publish products
•    Manage the electronic product library
•    Advise other team members on templates and formats for products
•    Provide administrative support to Program Office
•    Conduct International Travel to interoperability meetings (Australia, New Zealand, Canada & UK)
•    Provide general support at interoperability meetings (answer queries, take minutes, provide product management advice)
•    Any other duties as assigned.

Resources managed: 
Product Manager has no direct reports.
Product Manager will be provided with a travel budget for domestic and international travel.

  • Highly skilled with use of Microsoft 365
  • Skilled with document editing, publishing and filing
  • Skilled in electronic file management including use of Share Point (or ability to learn)
  • Ability to work in a small team with minimal supervision (self-starter)
  • Ability to engage with people from other nations (Australia, UK, USA, Canada and New Zealand) and senior level individuals.
  • Able to travel by air both domestically and internationally for up to two weeks at a time
  • Must be a citizen of either the USA, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand.
  • Must hold an A or NATO Visa and EAD

All selected candidates are subject to background checks and for this position will require a UK Government Security Clearance of Security Check (SC(O)) prior to starting work

This role is 40 hours a week but does not require set working hours each day. There is flexibility in work start and finish times both in the office and from home. Due to international engagement across multiple time zones, there may be occasions when there is a requirement (once a month) to conduct video teleconference (VTC) calls in the evening or early in the morning.

Frequency or travel is around 2-4 times per year but may vary depending on business need. 

The British Embassy and its US Network embraces hybrid working, allowing its staff to typically work from home 1 or 2 times a week.  We are an organization that also recognises the critical value of teamwork and we embrace and endorse collaboration by ensuring that all staff attend the office flexibly yet regularly.
