Main purpose of job:
The British Embassy Bamako is part of a worldwide network, representing British political, economic, and consular interests overseas. The British Government’s new Africa Strategy, announced by the Prime Minister in 2018, will see an uplift in British diplomatic presence in the Sahel. This includes a significant expansion of staff numbers and of the estate at British Embassy Bamako. This role covers several portfolios, all of which are essential to the smooth running of the Embassy and some elements of which require working directly with the Ambassdor.
Roles and responsibilities:
Protocol (30%)
- Lead on Protocol issues and formalities to ensure the Embassy follows correct local procedure in all areas, and referring upwards as necessary.
- Establish a network of contacts in the relevant Malian authorities to quickly and efficiently resolve arising issues following agreed guidance.
Press (30%)
- Review local press daily, summarising and providing analysis to inform political staff, policy-makers and other stakeholders, exploring specific issues in response to interest.
- Build and sustain a wide network of informed reporters and commentators on current affairs from across Malian civil society.
- Maintain embassy Communication platform including website, Facebook and Twitter.
Admin (30%)
- Provide ad hoc administrative support, including translation, in coordination with the Corporate Services Team
Visits (10%)
- Organise visit programmes and handle arrangements for visiting staff.
- Proven interpersonal and communications skills with a strong delivery in a customer facing role.
- Experience with computers especially Word-processing and spreadsheets
Ability to prioritise and deliver high quality results on multiple areas of competing work to tight deadlines
- Fluent written & spoken English and French
Previous experience of working for an Embassy or other international organisation.

Working patterns:
Embassy working hours are 08:00-16:30 Mon-Thu and 08:00-12:30 Fri.
At the moment it is not possible to work remotely, though some site visits might be required as may visits to contractors or suppliers.
