Science and Innovation

Background:

The Science and Innovation (S&I) team in Houston seeks a Science and Innovation Intern for the 2020 Spring semester. This is an opportunity to learn about UK government science and innovation policy, as well as explore opportunities in international science diplomacy.

The UK S&I network works to understand and influence US policies on cutting-edge science & innovation, inform UK government science policy, and make connections for UK research to inspire strategic science collaborations and partnerships to benefit UK prosperity and policy goals.

The successful candidate will join a team of two led by the Head of Science & Innovation Houston. The Houston S&I team maintains the UK government’s science and innovation interests in the Southwestern United States (Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Colorado), and is one of 7 S&I teams throughout the US coordinated by the British Embassy in Washington, DC. Globally, the UK S&I network comprises 110 officers in over 40 countries around the world.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Research and report on priority sectors in the Southwestern United States, notably AI/Machine Learning, Health and Life Sciences, and Clean Growth, to inform policy reporting and S&I activities.

  • Perform background research and produce briefings to contribute to successful visits, meetings and broader engagement with the institutions and organizations in our region.

  • Attend internal meetings, external events or conferences covering S&I topics.

  • Through background research, contribute to the identification of further industry, government, and university stakeholders to target.

  • Job shadow SIN colleagues in the creation of digital media plans to identify opportunities to broaden communication activities at the Houston post via the global SIN accounts.

  • Contribute to the conception and delivery of high-profile science events.

  • Must be currently enrolled and degree-seeking at the undergraduate or graduate level, with at least 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework completed (typically, juniors or seniors in an undergraduate program). Since this is an unpaid internship, students are required to arrange college (or graduate-level) credit in exchange for their internships before they can accept a position.

  • Candidates seeking an undergraduate, Masters, or PhD in a related field such as science, policy, or international relations are encouraged to apply, but no specific scientific degree is required.

  • The ideal candidate will possess strong research, analytical and organisational skills, and be able to work independently.
