The Embassy is responsible for representing the British Government’s interests in the US and for reporting on developments in the US to government departments in London. The Energy and Environment Team leads on all energy and climate policy issues, working to advance UK objectives in the US. An internship with the team would provide an exciting opportunity to gain experience of energy and climate research and analysis, and would aid the team at a time when climate engagement is a top priority for the UK Government in the run up to hosting COP26 in late 2020 and for the UK presidency the subsequent year.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist the team with research, and contribute to energy and climate policy reporting.
- Complete longer-term project(s)/assignment(s) likely in support of COP26.
- Attend relevant events and report back on UK government priorities.
- Support the organisation and/or facilitation of Embassy events to further energy and climate priorities.
Minimum Qualifications/Experience:
- Must be a junior or a senior in an undergraduate program, or enrolled in a graduate program by the start date of your internship (least 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework completed). Since this is an unpaid internship, students must receive college credit in exchange for their internships.
- Preferably enrolled in a program with relevant international energy, environmental, and/or climate policy content, or have demonstrated an interest in energy, environmental, and/or climate policy.
- Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as time management, presentation, and organisational skills.
- Possess a successful track record in working on independent research projects.
This program offers internships for 15-25 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. These are unpaid internships, for college credit only, but the Embassy does provide a stipend of $100 per month for transportation costs. This internship will start on 13 January 2020 and end on 10 April 2020.
Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders, A or J1 Visa holders with valid Work Authorization Document. If you hold a Visa other than an A or J1 Visa you are not currently eligible to work at the Embassy. All candidates will be subject to background checks and security clearance. Successful applicants will need to provide confirmation that they will be earning college credit as part of this internship.
