Background:

 

The Department for International Trade is the UK Government’s international business development arm. DIT USA is charged with assisting US companies looking to invest in the UK, and with transatlantic trade development between the UK and the US. The British Consulate General in Miami has an opportunity for an energetic, self-motivated individual to contribute to these objectives and gain valuable, real-world experience through this internship opportunity.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Being a member of a team that helps UK companies with the development of their US market entry strategy and supports UK companies already active in the US

  • Observing Trade and Investment Officers and Associates who help US companies looking to expand in the UK and support US companies already active in the UK

  • Shadowing trade and investment staff while they work on the following projects: organizing trade missions, compiling visit programs for diplomats, planning company meetings, facilitating introductions and producing and managing networking events

  • Attending bi-weekly office meetings, receptions, conferences, and other trade related business events

  • Having the opportunity to meet and speak to high level UK and US company representatives and public officials

  • Learning about how trade and investment works across the following sectors: tech and creative, food & drink and retail, infrastructure and resilience



Minimum Qualifications/Experience:


 


  • Must be a junior or a senior in an undergraduate program or enrolled in a graduate program by the start date of your internship (least 60 credit hours of undergraduate coursework completed). Since this is an unpaid internship, students receiving college credit in exchange for their internships is required.

  • Students pursuing degrees in business, international relations, or a related field a plus

  • Strong research, analysis, and report writing skills

  • Computer literacy in standard Microsoft Office applications

This program offers internships for 15-25 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. These are unpaid internships, for college credit only, but the Embassy does provide a stipend of $100 per month for transportation costs. This internship will start on 13 January 2020 and end on 10 April 2020.

 

Under US State Department requirements, the Embassy may only employ, as non-diplomatic staff, persons who are US citizens, US Green Card holders, A or J1 Visa holders with valid Work Authorization Document. If you hold a Visa other than an A or J1 Visa you are not currently eligible to work at the Embassy. All candidates will be subject to background checks and security clearance. Successful applicants will need to provide confirmation that they will be earning college credit as part of this internship.
