Main purpose of job:

To support the Education, Health & Life Sciences Sector Team at the Department for International Trade at the British Embassy Mexico City. You will work with UK exporters and investors in the Education, Health and Life Sciences sector to deliver an increase in trade and investment. You will work across a virtual team (with policy, programme and commercial colleagues) to deliver to trade and investment objectives as part of cross-Embassy education and health strategies. You will develop excellent relationships with UK and Mexican companies, and deliver an impactful programme of activity focussed on developing a robust pipeline of UK exports and investment in your sectors throughout the supply chain, working to overcome barriers to market access, and to promote Mexico as a destination for UK companies.

The Department for International Trade (DIT) works with UK businesses to support UK exports and bilateral investment in Mexico. Headquartered in Mexico City, DIT Mexico works across 10 priority sectors, with regional offices in Guadalajara and Monterrey.

Roles and responsibilities / what will the jobholder be expected to achieve?

Contribute towards the Trade and Investment objectives of the team: (60%)

  • Develop and deliver a programme of activity to support UK Education, Health and Life Sciences companies (including ELT, TVET, Digital Health, Pharma, Medical Devices) to do more, and higher value business in Mexico, including high-level visits, trade missions, and account management.
  • Promote UK expertise in Education, Health and Life Sciences sectors amongst local decision makers, and work with the Sector Teams in London to promote business opportunities in Mexico to UK industry.
  • Source and strengthen a pipeline of UK opportunities in Education, Health and Life Sciences, developing relationships with key stakeholders in the public and private sector.
  • Working with the UK Prosperity Fund, seek opportunities to deliver commercial benefits for the UK, informing the focus of the programmes and resulting business-oriented activity.
  • Contribute to the effective functioning of the Embassy Education and Health Virtual Teams, working closely with policy and programme colleagues.
  • Develop and maintain excellent market intelligence in the Mexico Education, Health and Life Sciences sectors working with trade associations, sector experts, and London to inform Embassy strategies and UK industry on latest developments.

Lead the Market Access Barrier portfolio for the Education and Life Sciences sector (25%)

  • Work with UK companies to overcome barriers to trade by leveraging relationships with government and regulators, as well as internal colleagues focused on trade policy.
  • Deliver activity for the Education and Life Sciences sectors that ensures alignment with country and regional (Latin America and the Caribbean) strategies, with a focus on quality and delivery of outcomes across the region.
  • Develop relationships with key stakeholders in DIT HQ and relevant UK and Mexican sectoral business organisations so as to gain a clear picture of the Mexican business landscape and our toolkit for addressing market access barriers.

Deliver a robust pipeline of opportunities as a result of COVID-19 in the Education and Life Sciences sector (10%)

  • Identify new subsectors with high potential for UK companies.
  • Pursue short-term opportunities as a response of the current COVID-19 pandemic.

Contribute to the corporate objectives of the Embassy (5%)

  • Deliver work in line with Embassy Values (Honesty, Professionalism, Inclusion & Respect).
  • +3 years’ experience either on Education or Health and Life Sciences;
  • Trade and Investment experience;
  • project management;
  • account management;
  • excellent stakeholder management skills;
  • Language: fluent in English and Spanish (both written and spoken). 
Experience or knowledge of the education and healthcare landscape in Mexico and the UK.
